First off,Maris was born in Kelley Lake Minnesota near Hibbing where Kevin ** Hale and Bob Dylan are from.So is Gary Pucket from the Union Gap but he doesn't get much publicity.Oh,and that Bugliosa guy in the OJ trial and a drag-porno king named Paciotti are from Hibbing too.Maris was a shirt tail relative of mine through about 4 relatives of mine married to his cousins.I'm of Croation heritage just as Maris was.It's pretty clanish here where everyone that's been around for a few generations seems to be related.
I'm 47 and I remember growing up how no one in the family had much good to say about Roger.I remember relatives going to see him play at the old Met Stadium in Bloomington where the Mega Mall is now located against the Twins.I actually think Maris got in trouble for giving the crowd the finger the day my relatives were at a game.
If the movie is any indication of what he was like as a person,I think the guy was just missunderstood allot?What really got him in deep trouble with the locals here is when he always said his hometown was Fargo,North Dakota which is over 200 miles away.Actually,the guy did move there when he was in 1st grade or something so I don't see what the beef was.Then his name at birth was Marras and the locals didn't like it when he changed his name to Maris.
Maris was the kind of guy who just didn't seem like he could catch a break from people.Even after his death Budweiser took away his family's beer distributorship in Florida claiming his kids were selling expired beer.hehe!
I took away something else from the movie which I thought was one hell of a good movie with unbelievable central casting.I'm not a big Billy Crystal fan but he put out one good movie with 61.What I took away with the movie is the whole big deal about asterisks with the home run record.
Ruth hit more home runs in fewer games but he played in the league when it was segregated.Does that account for the record being flawed on his behalf?
Then you have Maris playing in Yankee stadium when he broke the record and right and center field was about 490 or some ungodly measurement unheard of in modern day times.
Then ** Guire,Sosa and Bonds were all on roids when they were fighting it out to break the record.
I actually think Maris is about the only legitimate holder of the record and the rest should have asterisks by their names.Do I have a point on that one?
