    Computer geeks...CPU upgrade
I'm finishing my computer overall. I started with my basic emachine I bought in augest and I'm almost done with upgrades. I have done ram (6gig), hard drive (250gig), and a 1gig video card.
I am not a gamer. Just heavy surfing, music, ect. Don't need a super CPU, just something better. Thoughts on this upgrade?

    I am currently running: AMD Athlon™ LE-1620
    (Operates at 2.4GHz, 1024KB L2 cache and 2000MHz).

Was looking going with: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ Brisbane 2.9GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor Model. Hyper Transports: 2000MHz
    L1 Cache: 128KB+128KB
    L2 Cache: 2 x 512KB

Is the computer working? Keep it the way it is

Can't run a Ferrari on NYC streets. You're gonna get into a bunch of compatibility and power issues IMO...

yes it would be night and day, but is it not "fast" enough for you? For what your doing you just need room in ram to store all your open shit. It doesn't take too many cycles to figure out whats going on...

How many Watts is your Power Supply? Seems like you would need 400W+ with that Vid Card. Most eMachines only have 250-300.

BTW --- if you do upgrade with that CPU think about a going to a 64bit OS

iwym. I wrote a bunch of info for you but lost it some how Here is a summary:
                  1) I was going to say to check out what p/s you will need at a site:

                  or

                  2) With the emachine, I'm not sure how well ventilated it is. You might need an upgrade on the CPU fan, or add a internal USB fan to help out with the cooling.

Your first mistake was not starting with a Mac. If you are seriously into music, you would have never bought a Windows machine in the first place.

Should have just bought this for 600.00 and you wouldn't have to upgrade a thing.

becarful with 64bit OS, you are VERY limited to compatible programs but you can use all the 6 gig of ram u have, 32bit will only see 4gb of ram no matter if you have 6gb or 20gb....
