it looks like the plan was to make it 11-on-4 for one play and see how that worked out!

they were like "dude! let's fukkin take 8 GUYS OUT OF THE PLAY and play them 11 on 4! that will confuse the HELL out of them!"

do you know if they were just trying to lead the giants' defense off the field and then have open space to run up? i've seen that trick play a few times also, but i'd assume it would fail more than it worked.

Redskins held a "draw up a play" contest and that was the winning submission.

They apparently didnt notice the name on the entry.... Corky from Life Goes On.

Funny..I saw the Seahawks pull this same stunt in the 70s when Jim Zorn was a young athletic QB with great running prowness..I think, if memory serves me..he was a lefty too..boy how him and Largent could put up some good stats.

That play was the ol' swinging gate play. The play has multiple options:
                                1. You can throw it to the guy behind the line on the left side and everyone blocks and he finds a crease.
                                2. There is a receiver on the right that usually draws man to man coverage.
                                3. The holder can run it.
                                4. On this particular play, the snapper is an eligible receiver due to the fact that he is the end man on the line of scrimmage. (the receiver on the right is off the line)

Here's how the Redskins fukked themselves:

They sent 6 linemen and a back to the left (also commonly called the muddle huddle)
The Giants only send 5 guys which ideally creates a mismatch in the Redskins favor if you throw it behind the linemen.
They motioned the kicker to the left behind the line also. He is a nonfactor in the NFL catching and running the ball.
The Giants showed no respect there and did not send another.
Normally teams on D will put an equal amount over there as well. The Giants did not.
Now if you watch closely, when the O line moves over, the tight end becomes the snapper.
They send the WR on the right on a drag route to the left which is a decoy to pull the defenders that way.
It is clear they wanted to go to the snapper/TE but and he was open if the holder leads him but he doesn't even look at him.
The real goof was they sent the back to the left that was behind the line on a go route which plays into the hands of the outnumbered
defense leaving only the kicker behind the line. All of that blew that option.
Add that to the fact that the Giants sent 3 Dlinemen on an all out rush didnt leave the holder anytime to make a decision. The speed of defenders is what makes this play hard to run in the NFL.
The holder who has little to no NFL experience as a passer had no time to make a decision and just heaved it up.
The funny thing is if he just gets the snap and leads the TE then it looks like a genius play.

That had disaster written all over it.

Imagine if the Giants would have returned it for a TD?

Peter, that had to be the most hopeless play ever.
I couldn't believe what I was watching. It's bad enough when they were first trying to catch the other team off guard, but they went back to it after the time out. There was 8 giants waiting for that ball to come down. And how about waiving the kicker over. Hilarious.
