The actress Brittany Murphy died this morning after going into cardiac arrest, police in California have said. Firefighters in Los Angeles attended “a medical request” at Murphy’s home in West Hollywood and Murphy was pronounced dead on arrival at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre. She was 32.
The Los Angeles police are said to be looking into this sad and sudden death. Its cause remains unknown. However, one cause of sudden cardiac arrest in people in their thirties is heavy cocaine use. (Another, rare, cause of sudden death – especially in young women – is cardiac complications resulting from anorexia nervosa.)
In Britain, certainly, accident and emergency doctors have reported seeing an increasing number of cases of chest pain brought on by cocaine, and in particular by cocaine and alcohol mixed. It seems that, in this country at least, our insatiable thirst for booze – and lots of it – on a Friday night is encouraging injudicious and excessive cocaine use.
The combination of a lot of alcohol and cocaine puts an acute strain on the cardiovascular system – even more than either booze or cocaine taken on its own. In a small number of cases it can kill, suddenly. If it’s true, as seems to be the case, that more people than before are regularly over-doing things in this way, then we will see more sudden deaths in the 20 to 40 age group.
As I say, no one knows what caused Ms Murphy’s early death. She was a talented actress who had parts in a number of interesting films: Clueless (1995) with Alicia Silverstone, Girl, Interrupted (1999) – where she played one of the patients in the mental hospital where Winona Ryder’s character has just checked in – and 8 Mile (2002) and Sin City (2005). It is for these fine achievements that she will be remembered.
