SACRAMENTO, Calif. --
As popular as it might be with fans, the Sacramento Kings $1 beer night at Arco Arena has some organizations worried about drunken driving.Through the years, the pride of the Kings franchise has been its fan base: Arco was known as a loud, sold-out crowd every night. But losing, along with the economy, has taken its toll. When the season ended last year, the Kings went back to the fans with a series of surveys, asking what it would take to get more fans back into the stands. One of the things fans told the Kings was to cut the prices on food and beverages. For their Wednesday night match, fans can buy beverages from soda to beer for $1. Fans might love the plan -- fewer than 1,000 seats remain available -- but it worries other groups."Really, the concern is not necessarily with the $1 beer. The concern is how people are planning to get home after they consume the $1 beer," said Silas Miers, with Mothers Against Drunk Driving.Mitch Germann, who works in marketing for the Kings, said there will be stations set up on the concourse with information on designated driving programs and taxicabs."We want to be responsible. You can only buy two at a time. We are going to cut off alcohol sales at the end of halftime. We're going to increase our security measures a little bit," spokesman Mitch Germann said, adding the team had been working closely with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
