If Western Civilization hadn't poured the groundwork for morals and ethics, what Mr. Woods is doing would be quite alright actually and in some religions it is just that.
We seem to be going backwards here.

I never made a judgment as to whether Tiger Woods acted immorally or not. His actions certainly go against our society's accepted rules of behavior, but any question of morality is a much deeper issue. As I've noted, society does not necessarily occupy the moral high ground when it comes rules and behavior.

My only contention with you was the relating of morality and repercussions. The two notions are not innately congruent. If I haven't made that perfectly clear by now, maybe this has all been a waste of time.

Deuce, before we argue about this anymore, I think I understand where our disconnect is occurring. You are talking about societal standards of behavior and (in my opinion) confusing that with morality.

Society does not define morality. Their laws and codes do not make actions either moral or immoral. They can attempt to govern based on what they perceive to be a moral sense, but they don't set any true moral standard. Actual morality and immorality exists only in the mind of individuals.

Unfortunately, most people don't have a problem with choosing wrong. That's why we have the need for societal repercussions and consequences.

If you make a choice to do or not do something based on what the repercussions of your actions will be, you are not making a decision founded in morality or ethics. If you make a decision regardless of what the repercussions will be, most likely you are.
                              Dead on.

Let athletes make their money as athletes, not as endorsers. Then they can act a fool and no one will care what they do or when they do it. As long as they are not in jail, they can make money. It makes no sense for athletes to be pitchmen, never has, never will. They are on television all the time and perform a certain skill/craft, other than that what makes them great pushers of products. We as a society are stupid enough to believe that Jordan's shoes, Tiger's clubs/balls, and Peyton's drink will make us better athletes. Who's the fool?
