Deuce, you can't compare the Red Sox to the Yankees. The Yankees outspent the Red Sox by $80 million last year. The Tigers had a payroll of $6 million less than the Sox. The Yankees are in their own league and then there is about a dozen teams that have comparable payrolls after the Yankees.

If they didn't spend it to get the best talent available they wouldn't be putting the best product on the filed for their fans.
