Yes. They did not spread them out over a weeks time. There were several other good bowls, like the Fiesta, Gator, Peach, and the wild Holiday Bowls. Today, there are 34 bowls, and half of them or more are totally worthless. Does anyone give a caca about the Eagle Bank Bowl or the Motor City Bowl? The list goes on and on. I remember when the Sugar Bowl was played on New Years Eve, or New Years day. The New Years Day lineup was simple. First, the Cotton Bowl, then the Rose Bowl, then the Orange Bowl. Today, the bowl season is nothing more than anextension of the regular season. Ove half of the teams qualify, even though many of them are 6-6 or 7-5 and do not deserve to be in a bowl.

Well you know there is only one thing that any sports program understands......................... The all mighty dollar!!!!!!!! Cuz with out dollars they do not have programs. No coach, no scholarships for those really good players who are poor, and no fancy stadiums. Either way the dollar talks and all the other bull takes a back seat. Just the way I see it.

The biggest problem is that they are dragging the season out, and too many people lose interest. I mean, after all the bowls that are played on or around New Years, who is going to boter watching a couple of two loss teams playing in the Orange Bowl on a Tuesday Night after New Years? Who cares about the GMAC Bowl the next night, featuring two teams that half of the nation has never even heard of. Even having the Championship Game on a Thrusday Night is stupid. Why not a Saturday Night, like Jan 2, when everyone is still in the bowl mood? There are just too many bowl games. A team that goes 6-6, or 7-5 should not be rewarded for mediocrity.

Other than these the top 8 of the AP poll which team has any national interest ?
The 4 old major bowls could accommodate , My guesses
Sugar : Ala & TCU
Cotton : Tex & Cinn
Orange : Fl & Boise
Rose : OSU & Ore
After the bowls you would have a mythical national champion and plenty of good debate

I miss the New Years Day bowls that would start at like 11:00am EST with the Citrus Bowl and run through the day with the Cotton Bowl at 2:00 and the Rose Bowl at 4:30.... Orange and Sugar that night.

If I remember correctly towards the end of the old bowl system before the Fiesta Bowl laid claim on #1 & #2 the Sugar was played NY Eve night then as you said , on NY Day it was the Cotton , Rose & Orange in that order

jj, is right here. Although I love the the old bowl way where you didn't have the name of the bowl that would take a whole minute to say and they weren't so many teams, today's bowls offer gamblers a ton of opportunities. That's the only reason people watch alot of these blow hards go at it.

I don't remember the Sugar ever being played New Year's Eve. They moved the Peach Bowl to that slot about 10 years ago IIRC. I think when the Fiesta took over that MNC matchup they started playing it on Jan 2nd...which was fine really. I hate the way it's done now, a week later. These teams don't need a month in between games. They should be filling that time with some form of a playoff.

I have thought in recent years there has been too many mismatches in bowl games. It is starting to look better this year though. I have always said that the BCS made it great to gamblers but not great for the fans.

Remember Tressell when he lost to Florida and blamed the long layoff for his loss? I am certainly not agreeing with him, but the long layoffs do seem to be a bit unnecessary. This year is the worst. The PapaJohns, Liberty, Alamo, and GAMC Bowls are all played AFTER the Rose and Sugar Bowls. Does anyone really care about these Bowl Games? Is anyone going to get excited to see Troy and Central Michigan play on 1/6? What about Michigan State (-10 or more players) vs Texas Tech on 1/2, and in the evening, to top it off.

I remember the Cotton Bowl in 79. We were at a bar, trying to recover from the previous night. One of my closest friend was an elderly gentleman who lived and breathed Notre Dame football. Notre Dame was playing Houston and getting it handed to them, by a 34-7 count at half time. My friend left the bar, went across the street to his Catholic Church, and prayed for the Irish. When he returned, most people were watching another bowl game, but he and I watched an amazing Irish comeback. They won 35-34. After that game, he went to church before every Notre Dame game. Unfortunately he passed away about the same time that Notre Dame football did. Simpler times.

I am a fan of all the bowl games. While I agree that most of the match ups are pretty boring and lacking in appeal it gives a degenerate like myself something to do around the holidays.
What's better than laying on the couch hungover New Years Day winning money on some football games??
