What is your take on this statement in regards to wiring $$$ to a book....
Whoever being engaged in the business of betting or wagering knowingly uses a wire communication facility for the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of bets or wagers or information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers on any sporting event or contest, or for the transmission of a wire communication which entitles the recipient to receive money or credit as a result of bets or wagers, or for information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.[1]

I'm having a debate with a non-gambling friend who is intelligent.

What is your take/interpretation of the above law?

I appreciate the response but I'm a little confused.

Isn't Western Union a telephone wire?

And when you say "bank wire" what specifically are you referring to?

i tell my bank to wire funds to bank xyx account whatever in whereever, whether it's in the usa or portugal or somewhere else -- that's a bank wire.

I have no idea what western union is considered.

But, the wire act, which is what you are referring too, has nothing to do with wiring money. It's about transmitting wagers over telephone lines.
