I have a Mac and a HP Laptop. It depends what you want to use it for. For my Mac anything involving Photoshop editing Pictures, editing Video there is no comparison. For everything else I use my HP, but the difference in quality is also no comparison in my opinion, but you get what you pay for. (paid $2.5k for my Mac, paid $600 for my HP) I have had my Macbook Pro for over 4 years and it is just as fast, can do more applications at the same time as my HP of less than 1 year old.

But keep in mind if you purchase a Mac and have always had a PC things are going to seem "backwards" or opposite at first. For ie: windows close on the left side instead of right.

I am using a 3 year old Macbook laptop. It has been good. I have taken it to get fixed a few times (display, and hard drive) that was covered by the plan I purchased. All this being said I will most certainly go back to PC after this. For the price you could use a PC like a disposable. Furthermore I have run into many software compatibility issues (some off the beaten track software for exam taking etc.). And don't let anyone with a Mac tell you they don't break down like PCs do. We Mac users know the stroke option + command + esc. just as well as PC users know ctrl + alt + del. And safari is a dog of a browser with firefox being a poor substitute (IMO).

Boner makes a good post, as far as performance a mac is much better, pcs are good for 2-3 years and then you have to throw them away as they become slow.
