Bill, the US has improved soccer a lot since they started, gaining fans around the place and buying players from all around has helped a lot, besides the fact coaches are getting better to the point of increasing MLS level. USA national team on the other hand has been a very solid team since a long time ago, the first team I remember is the one that lined up Alexis Lalas and Bocanegra in US 94, that team was respected. Within Concacaf the US is still one of the hard teams, specially when playing home. You guys and Mexico are Costa Rica's headache, but of course, we're too unstable to even feel confident when playing any other team so it's not a good comparison.

Quarterfinals. About the best that could be expected next year as well, best case scenario. They are between the 10th and 20th best team in the world. Until they can develop a few more players and have their regulars play overseas on top level clubs, they will not be able to break through to the top 8.

With the size and sporting nature of the USA, it is a surprise they aren't a soccer powerhouse. Then again, your best athletes focus on and go into sports like NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB so I suppose for USA to become a soccer powerhouse, the popularity of soccer as a spectator sport has to increase significantly.

                With Obama anything is possible.

He will dial up the team and fart 'hope' out of his asshole.... and the team will respond with a 13-1 victory over South Africa in the final.

                Obama can do anything.

The same countries have been on top for 50 years and will continue. How the US got that far in '02 is still a mystery.

Exactly. We need our players to move overseas early and experience the fast-paced high level of play early in their development. Too many of our players give it a shot, struggle or don't "dominate" the way they would in the MLS, and move back.
