Vastly more talent to choose from than second tier teams from other conferences. Arkansas and Auburn are not 2nd tier teams. Auburn has gone undefeated a couple times the past 15 or so years but they were on probation 1 of those years and couldn't play a bowl game. Forgot what happened the other time but Auburn is consistently a top notch program nationally. Arkansas has played in the SEC title game a few times recently. They are a good program that has finished in the top 20 numerous times just recently.
Mississippi St. a few years ago was one of the best programs in the SEC. They were in the top 10 in the country, etc. With Smoot and all those great defensive players. South Carolina almost won the national championship in the mid 80's. They lost a game where they were heavily favored to Navy at the end of the year or they would have won it. We call it the chicken curse and it is very real.
Vanderbilt is literally an intramural team so I agree there.
Kentucky has flashes in the top 20 but obviously a basketball school.
