Let's just see some for comparion. Watch the way the leg moves to ensure contact in these dirty hits:
Larque's skates actually move before contact to ensure the hit.
This Cooke hit also shows a failed shoulder check and that leg is just hanging out there, right in the train tracks of Cole.
Here is the Ovechkin hit. You will not see hit right leg move at all, from the moment he commits to the hit, to the point where Gleason turns his body. Don't let the homer announcer fool you, he even admits that Gleason "changes lanes".
To me, what makes this hit so different is that Gleason's body was turned sideways, not face to face like most dirty hits. If he stayed on his path, he gets crushed. He's only "leading" with the knee because that's how the shoulder is leaning. Unlike most dirty hits where the leg sticks outwards, he's actually leaning it forward, and most of the time, knee on knee hits mean the guy throwing the hit change their lane/direction/body. Here, Gleason is the one who made the drastic move with the puck and body, Ovechkin is already charging in once Gleason moves that puck in the other direction. I don't know, just seems blown out of proportion.Comment -

I think it's because of the other incident this season. If they didn't do anything, all of Canada/Crosby fans would cry bloody murder. Got to suspend the dirty Soviet.
