My computer's loaded with viruses. How do I get rid of them and what spyware, anti-virus software should I use?

Trend-Micro Systems is a pretty good Anti-Virus S/W. As far as spyware S/W goes... spybot or Ad-Ware should clear up your problems.

Just use your recovery disc that came with your pc.It will set everything back to the settings as when you bought it and get rid of your viruses.I have always used norton anti virus from symantec and have not had a problem yet.

There are several good free programs, but I would invest the $40 or so dollars for a good (and legitimate) anti-sypware program. Not only will it keep the machine clean, but it'll delete these rogue programs which get into your machine (like the scams claiming to be anti-sypware that force popup windows on your machine!).

Xoftspy has worked great on my machine. Was about $40 and that includes lifetime updates for the program.

Clean Up is a very good free program that frees junk on the machine. I use it with Xoftspy, so I'm not sure it'll kill viruses by itself.

Those programs can be found with a google search.

I use AVG anti-virus, which is free, and AVG Anti-Spyware, which isn't.

Raid: AVG is free from grisoft, they also have a great bundle for anti spyware. It's not too pricy (for the bundle) and it catches more things then Nortons and the other name brand virus protection software IMO.

Thanks again guys. New problem: Too many programs open up when I start up my computer which really slows it down. How can I set it up so that only the ones I need immediately open up and which ones are needed?

If you just want to go that route Raider, then you need to goto start. Then click on the "run" icon and type in "msconfig". Then click on the "start up" tab. Then un-check the icons that you don't want to pop up when your start your computer every time.

The reason this one is free (AVG), is so that you can clearly see that is dominant over the other rubbish that you must pay for firstly only to find out that you wasted your money IMO.

Do a scan with AVG and see what it picks up,then do another with Kapersky and see what you missed,AVG is not bad but it is not the best.Kapersky also has comes with anti hacker.

One of the best ways to avoid getting adware/spyware etc is to use Firefox and get an "Addon" or "extension" called No Script.

Once you see what it blocks you'll be glad you installed it.

I'd advise a setting change in No Script that will allow all your "bookmarked" sites to display/run normally but any other links you click on would be blocked from running a script that may do damage to your pc.

It allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site, and guards the "trust boundaries" against cross-site scripting attacks (XSS).
Such a preemptive approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality...
