Try to see the bright side, they left so you didn't have to go to court to evict them...I heard some crazy stories about tenants using the court system to stay almost 3 months for free. Try to find better tenants next time, check their credit and rental history.

He says they were family friends. Not sure it gets safer than that.

Absolutely do everything within your power to hold these people responsible for this destruction. If you do not they will do it again to another landlord or just continue to take advantage of others, to be unconcerned with well being of other humans. They have got to be held responsible for their actions. Document all destruction, take many photos. Sue them.

I was just getting ready to start the eviction process when they bolted.
They were friends, and seemed responsible -- the whole thing is depressing.

I'm thinking about it. Clearly, their intent was to defraud. They seem to owe everyone, from Consumers Energy to the cable company...and me.

My attorney thinks it is a waste of time and money -- I spend enough on him as it is (I'm practically putting his two kids through Mich State by myself!).

And these tenants were friends. It just feels weird to sue them, even though the relationship is irretrievably broken.
