I am a proponent of the spherical arts. I have tried to get discussions going about it occasionally but you're right, not many takers.
I have been playing for 35+ years. Back when I started, everything was snooker but there was a big switchover to 8-ball/9-ball awhile back. So I cheerfully adopted those. Now when I look at a snooker table, it looks freaking huge.
I love the game. I am okay at it. I came close to running back-to-back racks of 8-ball recently which would have been a big thrill for me. I've never done that before. I made it to the end of the second rack but missed a fairly difficult shot on the 8-ball. Even running one rack is a bit exciting for me. I'm not good enough that it is a routine thing by any means.
I think I could be quite good if I played more but these years I basically just play a couple times a month at the home of a friend with a table. You can only take your game so far with that level of practice.

I'm 37 years old, and the "pool hall" was the center of any gamblers world back in the day. For me. 1988 - 1993
You had all varieties of people just waiting around for a race to 5 for $20 and time, with a card game always going in the back room. Getting down on some football or whatever was never a problem, if the guy that owned the joint wasn't booking, the older dude playing straight pool on the back table surely was. If you loved to gamble, you learned to play pool just by accident because you spent so much time there. Same could be said for bowling alleys.
Nowadays, I play in the APA league once a week with my wife. That is the only time I play. I'm bad news for the guy at the bar who thinks he's good at pool and always wants to play for a drink or $5, but when it comes down to it, I'm not nearly good enough to play for any real money.
Play 8 and 9 ball. It is very rare to see people playing straight pool these days.

Not really. I come up with more than my share of circus shots in 9-ball or getting out of hooks, but actual trick shots? No. Never really tried to develop any.
