Xbox live is like $50 for 13 months. Also Xbox is coming out with Natal next year which is a Wii-like addon where it scans your body and the games imitate your movements without a controller. Xbox is the right choice.

From a expert point of view which is me. Yes I am an expert I have done work in the video game industry. Let me give you some pros and cons.

Xbox 360
pros - some games with a better ranking system then the ps3, download online games are better than ps3, finding friends online and matching games are easy.
cons - The controller sucks, they dont have built in wi-fi, hard drive sucks compare to the PS3 unless you buy the xbox 360 arcade with doesn't have a hard drive, have to pay for a monthly service to use gold service.

PlayStation 3
Pros - Controller is way better, you are able to install your psp, it comes with a wire controller which is better then the wireless due to the controller input lag on wireless, huge hard drive space compare to the xbox, wifi no need to wire anything in, no need to pay for internet service to download games, add-ons, and extras.
Cons - Online friend list is not user friendly, sloppy ranking system, when downloading game you have to wait to install it then unlike the xbox where you download and its there to play.

I'll be honest, I've grown up playing Xbox so I am biased. But I find myself playing on PS3 more because of the free online game play. I just can't justify subscribing another year to play Halo, which after COD, is childish and annoying. The gameplay, to me, is worse on PS3, but not enough to think it's not compareble. What I've always had a big issue with is the PS3 controller. I know it sounds insane, but the triggers on the two controllers are vastly different; the gun-like triggers on the 360 having indentations to rest your fingers, whereas the PS3 has the smooth curved triggers, where my fingers slide off. Shit bothers me to no end.

Cheers, bud. A PS3 it is. After my 360 fukked up I bought a DSi and despite all the free games I could ever want via the Acekard I need something more meaty.

I have have had 5 XBOX 360's break for no apparent reason. My son is on his 4th. I believe they were sued my several states under lemon laws. Every time they break you end up calling an Indian call center to get a replacement. I would recommend staying away from the 360......

we have these trade 3 games to get 1 new game for PS3 in Oz and he went scouting the city today for 4 hours looking through bargain bins for PS3 games

ended up buying shitty games second hand for $20 each, went to another store and got store credit of $75 then bought a new copy of Modern Warefare 2, then repeated the scouting, trading, credit, new copy 4 times

Oh, no doubt about it. The online experience on the Xbox is actually pretty amazing. You can do a lot of great things. The PS3 online experience is awful. You can barely tell when you get a new message, and when you do get one, you have to go all the way into your inbox just to read it. Clunky as fukk. I read that Sony fired the company that created the interface and hired someone new to redo the whole thing.

Technically, no. You can do a hard wire ethernet connection from your router into the Xbox, but that's not usually feasible for most people, or it just looks bad with wires all over the place. Well, you don't actually pay to repair the Xbox anymore with the new warranty extensions. You do have to pay for Xbox Live but the reality is if you aren't willing to invest at least $50/year into your console you are probably too poor to get one in the first place considering the price of games these days.
