Schilling's bloody sock called into question
Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's reputation was the target of an attempted hit from, of all places, the Orioles' television broadcasting booth. Gary Thorne, who does play-by-play of Orioles games on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) and has a solid national reputation, having done lots of work for ESPN, brought up the saga of Schilling's bloody sock during last night's telecast, according to the BOSTON GLOBE.

Thorne said on the air, while the Orioles were batting in the fifth, that he'd been told by Sox catcher Doug Mirabelli that was not blood, but paint, on the sock Schilling wore during Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Yankees. It was done for the public relations effect, Thorne said.

"The great story we were talking about the other night was that famous red stocking that he wore when they finally won, the blood on his stocking," Thorne said to broadcast partner Jim Palmer, the Hall of Fame pitcher, in a conversation that had begun with a discussion of Schilling's blog.

"Nah," Thorne said. "It was painted. Doug Mirabelli confessed up to it after. It was all for PR. Two-ball, two-strike count."

Palmer: "Yeah, that was the 2004 World Series [sic]." Thorne: "Yeah."

During a break two innings later, Thorne confirmed that's what he said, and that Mirabelli had told him so in a conversation "a couple of years ago."

"Go ask him [Mirabelli]," Thorne said.

Mirabelli was shocked, then angry, when relayed Thorne's comments.

"What? Are you kidding me? He's [expletive] lying. A straight lie," Mirabelli said. "I never said that. I know it was blood. Everybody knows it was blood."

There was no doubt he was hurting. Great performance as I recall.

Doug Mirabelli is probably just trying to save face in the locker room by denying Thorne's comments. Who really cares though years after the fact. I mean this is just a media driven story to sell newspapers in the North East.

Thorne now saying that he got it wrong and, from what I extrapolate, Mirabelli probably said something in the clubhouse for a joke which Thorne took seriously. Is this the biggest MLB non-story of the year so far?

It always seemed like a strange place from which to bleed, but yeah, this just an announcer trying to make a name for himself. Go back to hockey Thorne.

Even if his claims were true, then what's the point with coming forward with this now? Who really gives a crap about what might or might not have happened years ago? In fact if it was paint, I'd love the story even more.

Somebody at the Baseball HOF, where the sock currently is, said the blood has turned brown, which blood would naturally do in that time period. I don't think paint, or anything else that looks like blood, would do that.
If this is a scam, there have been great measures taken to protect it. I'm calling bullshit.

It was paint, Schilling was not hurt and a phony.

No way Thorne says this if it was not true.

Hollywood special effects in baseball. I could go for that. More exciting if a guy drops dead once in a while with blood spurting out.
Could even turn it into a 'who-pushed-the-button' contest, with the winner getting a free car.

why don't they just test the sock to see if it was blood or any other substance.....that would pretty muche end the debate.

It reminds me of a line in the movie Stand By Me.

The fat kid says, who do you think would win a fight between Superman and Mighty Mouse,I say Mighty Mouse. The skinny nutso kid with glasses says, are you crazy,Superman would because Mighty Mouse is just a cartoon.Fat kid comes back to say,It would be a good fight though.

The other 2 more mature kids with them say who cares,it's stupid.

I'm sort of paraphrasing it all but it came down to those words.I guess whenever I hear dumb sports myths and legends I put them in the same category as,who cares,it's stupid.Do you think Kurt Schilling would care if you were a ditch digger and you went to work under enormous pain where your blisters were bleeding?
