    Friend etiquette debate
When a friend recommends something to you that he/she liked a lot, say a movie, a book, a CD, a restaurant -- whatever, anything -- and you thought it was total crap, do you just not mention it, or do you give him/her s--t for wasting your time?!

I guess if your friend thinks he knows everything, you should give him s--t, right? I just hate hurting people's feelings.

I usually "don't" like anything someone else recommends ,so I do have to be honest and let them know how their taste stinks .
Movies would rank # 1[when was there a good solid movie made last ?]..my guess would be 5/20 yrs. ago,but the young ones will disagree as usual .

It is impolite to criticize a person for their tastes, especially if it is someone you like. It's usually best to keep your opinion to yourself or diplomatically mention that you didn't much care for whatever it is.

How very proper of you, Robyn. Did you pull that out of a Miss Manners book or something? ;-)

Hahaha... you don't even know. I told my friend that I usually stick with the consensus of the reviews, and he's like No way, Dude, forget that, I'm telling you it's great! I'm so conflicted right now between tearing him a new one and being a nice guy.

Nah, that's how I am in real life. I do not belittle someone for having an opinion that differs from mine. If we all felt the same way about everything, this would be a very boring world.

It's easy to give them crap if busting balls is the norm for the friendship. In cases where it matters though usually I try to find the bits and pieces of whatever was recommended that I either actually enjoyed or at the least didn't overly hate. This way on the surface it might appear to the friend that I agree with them and I'll not be a hypocrite in the process. However on the rare occassions that the differences between taste completely collide I'll simply have to let them know that it just wasn't for me. It's not being judgemental of their taste or acting all supieor in my own likes

If however the friend is the type of person that not only wants to know what you thought but actually seeks gratitude for affording you the pleasure of identifying with what they consider good, that is the type of friend that gets the cold hard brutal facts about what a tasteless moron they truly are.

Opinions have something to do with shaking germy, unwashed hands? The logic in your statement confuses me. Explain, please.

The discussion veered off into manners and being proper. To me, one of the most basic, courteous acts is a handshake. I would consider not shaking someone's hand incredibly disrespectful and impolite. But that's just me and my Western values.

As for the original post, anyone idiotic enough to think Law Abiding Citizen could be considered worth watching probably is too stupid to take your criticism of their stupidity as "constructive". Just make a note of how much of a moron they are and move on.

Keyboarding, I think I wrote you before -- Are you into Death From Above 1979 or did you just stumble upon that pic? Because that is a great record. Did they ever put out a follow-up?

keyboarding, this is a new day and age. Too many filthy, dirty and germy people. I am sure being a woman makes it easier to evade handshakes.

Robyn, how did keyboarding even know you don't like to shake people's hands? Did you dis' him at the bash or something?

You couldn't find any two people who are farther apart with their views on germs. Bread asked me if I dared him "lick the escalator handle" once. When I told him no, he did it anyway.

No, there is another thread where I mentioned it. The thread started by buzzy discussing public restroom etiquette.

I am a fan. They broke after this album and Sebastien Grainger went solo. I actually saw him open for Deerhoof here in Toronto a few months back. His current band is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebasti..._The_Mountains.
