    Orlando Jai Alai shutting down
    Sad day

Jai-alai fronton closing after 48 years in Seminole

Orlando Jai Alai, the Seminole County parimutuel where gamblers bet on handball-like games, is closing after nearly 48 years in business.

Employees were told Thursday that the struggling fronton's last day of operation would likely be Dec. 27.

Mutuels manager Howard Ostrom said the business' leadership had been trying aggressively for years to keep the business afloat, but increasing competition from other gambling outlets in the state contributed to its demise.

"I think most [employees] knew the writing was on the wall," Ostrom said. "Business was dropping steadily for years."

Fronton owner Hort Soper could not be reached for comment.

Jai-alai games are played February through April. The rest of the year, people come to place bets on races and games at tracks across the country.

On Thursday, some customers said they were upset but not surprised.

"We're like a family here," said Pedro Santos, 56, who lives in Kissimmee and has been coming to the fronton for 10 years. During that time, he said attendance has decreased dramatically.

"On a day like this, you'd see this place packed," he said, gesturing toward a room where a few small clusters of people moved about, and where most betting carrels were empty.

Crumpled betting tickets littered the floor and occasionally someone hollered while watching a race on a TV screen at a faraway track. There were no waits for placing bets.

About 75 people work at the fronton year-round. The fronton also employees about 30 jai-alai players, who fling small balls with boomerang-shaped baskets strapped to their wrists.

Live racing and jai alai have been declining in popularity across the state, but the Fern Park pari-mutuel was especially vulnerable because Seminole County prohibits card rooms.

Betting facilities in other parts of the state have propped up their finances with poker games. Ostrom said unfair policies at the state and county level put the business at a disadvantage. In recent years, the fronton tried to get annexed into Casselberry, where it hoped to receive authorization to open card rooms, but city commissioners weren't interested.

Casselberry Mayor Charlene Glancy, who opposes gambling, said she hates to see any business close, but she noted that it could be an opportunity for the land next door to the city limits.

"It's possible the time for jai alai has passed, and there will be a stronger interest for a different type of business there. We'd love to have it if it could be something else."

they're killing this like they did greyhound racing. I blame the greedy incompetent ****s that manage these places and state govt. No ****ing respect for the gambler, high vig, no promos, and then they blame casinos.
Parimutual sport has so much more to offer than casino games, it's a shame.

Um. I bet exactas, trifectas and pick 3's. How does that work in Jai Alai?

                      Never mind. I'll learn.

I been to jai alai twice...my father took me and it was very fun. Like it a lot more than horse racing. The times I went were in dania....the place was so dead. Can just imagine how it was back in the days. Weren't they planning on putting a casino or something in dania? I am pretty sure they have poker already

They have poker, yes. Casino slots there have been held up for years now, even though passed by a vote.

I used to go to the Miami Jai Alai all the time..I would go and try to shake hands with Quincy Quinella.

I would not mind going to a matinee..Have not been there in 10 years

There is a losing vibe atmosphere in the air..I can fell it..the hope and desperation but always imminent death

I personally love the sport itself but in Ocala we mainly got the guys that weren't good enough to play further South. There would be some talented guys but if they were to allowed to play full out they would have dominated. Never play players always play numbers.

Still they are some amazing athletes with incredible eye hand coordination. I've tried it and catching wasn't that difficult but the throwing required alot of practice.

If you know what you're doing, you can make an absolute killing betting jai-alai. First of all, the information they provide in the program is so limited, so basic, that it's next to worthless. So many people go there and just bet combinations of numbers. So if you create your own database of information from the results, you are so far ahead of every other bettor there, it's almost like legalized theft.

I heard Dania is doing well ever since they added their card room.. they have like a 40 dollar sit and go i think.. if you are ever there Bread , check out Grandma's Bakery.. its right around the corner and a really good greasy spoon type of place to eat.. I don't see how any of these places stay open... I understand Ocala.. i mean its fing Ocala.. what else are you going to do.. the Old Timers probably love to go and gamble .. makes them feel young and cool.. Bread when was the last time you went to Miami? I haven't been to that Miami Jai in like 4 years.. I always wondered how that place stayed open... I guess its like Manolo said "a little coke money never hurt anybody"
Yes I certainly do. And then afterwards I venture over to the Pink Pussycat for some naughty time fun. Anytime I make it out of that ghetto alive, I feel like I cheated death. Insanity.

Been to Grandma's many times. Great place for breakfast to cure a hangover before you hit up Dania and start the drinking all over again.
