Let's do something positive for the kids at Virginia Tech
I don't know why this killing has hit me so hard - I think it may be because I am older than most the victims yet feel like I am just starting my life.

Anyways, I was thinking about ways to remember the tragic events.

It seems many of those killed were studying foreign cultures and languages.

A lot of kids would like to study abroad, but don't have the funds to do so.

I would like to put together a scholarship from the online gambling community to send VT students abroad for a term next year. I figure our community gets a lot of flack and it would be nice to do something good for college kids (Rather than all the stuff you hear about robbing banks to play poker, etc)

In any case, I would guess offering scholarships of $5000 would take care of extra costs -most schools don't increase tuition to study abroad, but you've gotta live somewhere for 3-4 months.

I will offer the first $500 donation and hope a lot of you will join me. I figure if we get $5000 we can send one kid abroad. If we get $10,000 two, $100,000 20. I have no idea how successful this will be, but will also be contacting the books to see if they would like to pitch in.

I was thinking selection could be based on past scholastic achievements and maybe a one page essay about goals for the future and how studying abroad will impact those goals.

Well anyways, post in this thread or email me through one of the moderators if you are interested in helping out. Whether it is $10 or $10000 it will make a difference to some people on that campus.

    Thanks,

    Sean

If imgv volunteers to collect the money on your behalf, you might want to decline the kind offer.

But seriously, there are better things you can do with your time and money in terms of long term good than send a kid abroad for a semester. For one you try contacting your respective political representative, getting him to pull his finger out of his ass and try and come up with a way to stop this happening over and over again.

I am sure V Tech is going to do positive things here for students, ect. When I donate money it is only for sick children, handicapped children and other various charities that involve sickness.

I'm with you on helping out VTech students and it being from the online gaming community; it's a great idea and it reiterates we're not all degenerate criminals like our govt would like everyone to think. I don't know about the sending them abroad to study other languages, etc... but I would donate money to something that supports present families of those killed (funeral costs, support for spouses, scholarship for children of victims, etc...), surviving students' medical costs, or even fund initiatives in Blacksburg to help prevent gun violence. It might be easiest to make a large donation toward a specific charity or scholarship foundation that's already set up, but make it in our name (whatever we'd wanna call the online gaming community).

There are many people in the world who are in much greater need than college students from the US. It's not about money, it's about a change in mentality.

I'm all for it, but I think the students, staff and parents will be well taken care of in this situation.

Increaseodds, I will tell it like it is....

The majority (99.9%) of the posters on this forum....
will donate very little , if anything at all. They are here for the $$$. They complain about high fees when withdrawing etc... So I doubt you will be successfull in collecting anything here.

This forum is to make money beating books and hunting for bonuses. Your intentions are great. Unfortunately, you are at the wrong site.

Most gamblers cannot afford to donate, its all abut getting a bet down.

I am all for donations where needed, however I dont think this is a case of where donations are appropriate. Save your $ for now, wait till this hurricane season kicks off and wipes out some places, those folks will need the $ more.

Nothing wrong with the sentiment, but that is exactly what it is. A sentiment. As opposed to a cause.

Colleges in the US have a lot of money. But if you feel that donating to the rich is going to solve a problem, by all means.
