    Canadian accounts closed
Just got this from Virgin, not looking good for Canadians.

    Dear XXXXX

We are sorry to inform you that we will be suspending all accounts registered by players from Canada effective from the 13th April 2007. Due to recent developments in the global Internet gaming environment and following a review of the legalities of online gaming within Canada, we have determined that it is inappropriate for us to continue accepting online wagers from Canada.

We will be suspending all Canadian accounts on 13th April 2007 09:00 EST, we ask that you please withdraw any funds before this date and time.

Neteller has also announced that it will cease processing Canadian transactions from 9th April 2007. If you use NETELLER to transact with us you will need to withdraw any remaining funds in your account BEFORE the 9th April 2007.

After the 13th April, you will not be able to login into your account. However, you will be able to initiate a withdrawal of your funds by calling our customer support center at +44 800 458 6003

We appreciate your patronage and apologize for the inconvenience.

    Kind Regards

    Customer Service Team

WHERE does it say that Canadians can't bet online in Canadian law? I thought Ontario restricted means of advertsiing but has there been some new law that says it is illegal to bet online? Thanks.

The canadian law hasn't changed at all, and ontario didn't restrict any means of advertising, it was just a private members bill that was discussed but at this point has gone no further. The question has always been, was it ever legal, and this is the grey area that we find ourselves in, however there is nothing in canadian law that out and out bans online gambling.

Not at all, not even remotely. Therefore, I would guess that either....

*Some sportbooks know something about upcoming Canadian government policies and initiatives that has escaped the General Public at large, which obviously is extremely unlikely.....

*External pressure is being put on sportbooks from forces unknown to squeeze out Canucks.....

*Canadian market is just not putting enough of an impact into a sportbooks overall profit, thus the whole bloody nation is simply being abandoned.....

Perhaps something else is just as likely, who the hell knows. Anything is possible these days it seems. I keep expecting to wake up, go to SBR, and see that Pinnacle is giving Canadians the Big Adios, which would be somewhat umpleasant to say the least.

Stumpage, thanks a lot. My research has shown that it is illegal to set up an online co that accepts bets in Canada but not illegal for a Canadian to place a bet with a company. I'm no Canadian lawyer but I haven't seen anything that made me believe it was illegal for me to place a wager online.

From a philosophical standpoint, I would be very surprised to see Canada pass a law that makes it illegal for me, as an adult, to bet online. It's my money. I work very hard for it and would like to spend it as I see fit.

No problem, Buztah...You're still good to go from a wagering standpoint, and for the forseeable future I would reckon. Mind you, while I completely agree with and support your philosophical standpoint, I have to imagine there are quite a few Americans who shared the same belief before the do-gooders opposed to gambling saved their collective souls from damnation.

In the meantime, wager away. I'm seeing a lot of comments recently like "Canada is next", "Canada will ban online gambling soon", etc., and maybe they're right, but at this point those are just baseless opinions in my view. Give me some proof and I'll start making alternate lifeplans; Until then, it's back to the over/under lines at Halftime...

I don't have any information here and I'm simpl guessing, but could it be much simpler than all this? What if the number of Canadian wagers has shot through the roof since the whole USA disaster, making it a little too obvious that a large portion (or even most) Candadian accounts are actually American accounts in a Canadian name or with a Canadian address? Thus the "exiles" ruin it for the real Candians, because the USA doesn't want it to be this easy. They'd much rather you associate yourself with a European.

So long as matchbook puts itself in position to effectively service the growing wave of business that is on it's horizon, I'm not in the least worried about all the sky is falling hysteria. Pinnacle is great but if the day should come where they feel like walking from all this continent's business, exchange wagering is the natural evolution anyway and I look forward to seeing it grow to all our advantage.
