What age did you start making money consistently and realize you had what it took to be a winner?? I guess you took your lumps also at an early age and learned from it. I thought you told me as soon as you graduated college you went to Vegas and bet the NBA professionally??

#2Yes, the 1982-83 season was a terriffic year..........even though at that young age I was very ignorant in many aspects of sportsbetting. Only intense study and following the sport closesly allowed me to have a banner season(not one losing week until the 2nd or 3rd week after the All-star break), at which time I shut it down, mainly due to exhaustion more then anything else.
It wasn't until sometime between 93-95(after 7-9 years as an Oddsmaker in Vegas) did I figure out many of the attributes needed to profit consistantly.
Having said that, there have been lots of ups and downs over that time and where we are today..
The old saying is certainly true, this is a marathon, not a sprint.
Thanks for asking,

#5Thanks guys, but not really a legend of any sorts......just a job/hobby that I've enjoyed for many, many years and been involved in many aspects of the business, on both sides of the counter.
I do enjoy trying to help people win and learn though whenever I can.........I enjoy that just as much as winning myself.

How many units (say your bankroll is 100 units) per year do you think is a feasible expected goal (obviously the variance should be significant, but how many units would the "expected value" be)?
How many units would you recommend for a bankroll and what range of percentages of your bankroll would you suggest bets be?
and lastly, where can I see some of your picks?!Comment -

#16Originally posted by ImBettorgood post and thanks for sharing your insights, Fishhead. I'm new to the sports betting scene (but not to gambling - I come from a background in online poker) and I've got a few questions if you don't mind. When I came up in poker I profited greatly from asking and reading the right people.

Your question is one that is asked often of beginners, and in most cases, a very difficult one to answer in a forum setting not knowing your real size of your bankroll(one unit could be $10 or $1000+) , your age, your financial net worth, your expenses, etc., etc.
To answer your question in its simplist form, I would not risk more then 5% of your BR on one play, except in those rare instances where you may have an extraordinary high +ev matematical edge, this deserving more of your percentage.
For the second question, at times I talk about plays I really like in this forum(like Mich +8 against Iowa) and others I just somewhat release without much fanfare either in one of the sports forums here or in the SBR POINTS FORUM where I will play games I have a strong lean on and more.

#18In any Gambling competition, I would want Fishhead on my team if we were going to compete in such competition for a sustained period of time. I feel strongly that if motivated, Fishhead could adapt to any style of competition also. He is a gambling student with the fundamental foundation who pays attention and will likely find the angles necessary to give his side a solid chance at competing for a win in most any adverse situation, no matter if it was ping pong which needed to be analyzed.Comment -

#20Yes, I think he is. Manning can make anyone look good though. All they need to do is work hard and have a desire to excel. Certainly it helps if they have skill and I think he and Garcon both have what it takes.Comment -

#22Me, too, but I worry because the schedule seems a little weak minus a couple games. Things can change quickly, but if they get to complacent, then they may get a rude awakening when seeing tougher competition in the playoffs. Assuming of course they do well the remainder of the season. As you know they were only projected to win 10. And they may only win 10 since we have so much yet to determine. It will all be decided by their defense and offensive turnovers. On any given Sunday any team is vulnerable, IMO.Comment -

thanks for you reply, Fishhead. I'll definitely be tailing some of your picks...
I was also wondering what types of return you are able to get on your bankroll. Is a fair expected return an average of 50 units / year? 100 units / year? Obviously the actual number varies a ton from year to year but the only inhibitors on an expected return in terms of units would be if bookies were to stop taking one's bets / stop accepting such high $ action, right?Comment
