Why does New York have 2 of everything?
    Giants & Jets
    Mets & Yankees
    Islanders & Rangers

What's the deal? Is there a reason for this or are they just greedy?
(I'm non-US so forgive obvious historical explanations)

The interesting thing is that one of the two teams in each of those pairs (Jets, Mets, Isles) always have an inferority complex to the other.

They have enough fans to support 2 teams in each sport. If they didn't, one team would of moved a long time ago.

In the good old days there were only 16 mlb teams and 3 were in nyc -- the actual city (brklyn, manh, bronx) not new jersey or long island where 3 of those 6 you named play.

LA used to have 2 of everything also.

                  Lakers - Clippers
                  Dodgers - Angels
                  Rams - Raiders
                  Kings - Ducks

But Rams & Raiders moved away.

Because people need one team to cheer for when the other one sucks. They can rename the town Loserville and it wouldn't made a difference. New York has the most losing teams per year than any other city. Between all pro teams they have almost 300 losses a year. Name another city that has 300 losses a year in all sports combined.

hmm, so if they made another new york NBA team, it'd have to be the greatest team ever.
