"Even so, Obama will now be judged forever by this new yardstick. And he might find it a burden, especially as he must always keep U.S. interests -- not worldwide acclaim -- at the forefront of his policies.
Consider the long list of actions that Obama has promised: closing the facility at Guantanamo Bay within a year; achieving Middle East peace; ending the war in Iraq and defeating al-Qaeda in Afghanistan; halting Iran's possible drive to acquire a nuclear weapon; persuading North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons."

I take back all my comments... Let's just chuck this up as a "aspirational based" awarding and see how inspired Mr. Obama is to keep working on accomplishing all the things on his to-do list...

I think it's a bribe/protection money to prevent another US invasion for the next 3 years or so (maybe even 7).

Considering that the deadline to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize had to be done my Feb. 1st 2009 for this years prize .... I cannot think of ANYTHING he did prior to Feb 1st 2009 to warrant winning the prize.

He made a lot of huge promises, but still hasnt accomplished them.

        1. Bring the tropps home from Iraq sooner.
Nope, Stayed with the exact same timeline the Bush admin had put into place

        2. Close Gitmo.
Nope, Still open and doing business as usual

        3. Stop the Patriot Act
Nope, even put it into place for a few more years

        4. Bring transparency to the goverment
Nope, its even less transparent then before

So what has he ACCOMPLISHED PRIOR to the Feb 1st Deadline to warrant getting NOMINATED and WINNING the Nobel? Which was it?

Community Organizing work? Sitting in as a senator for only 1 year? Naming a post office after a famous black female? Passing a bill into law to congradulate the Chicago White Sox for winning the Wrold Series?

Key word was he was NOMINATED prior to the Feb 1st deadline for this prize, and what did he do to get nominated for that?

Then you got to ask, what has he done in those 9 months to even earn it, because he did nothing prior to Feb 1st.

Herbie makes some great points. I've been an Obama supporter since Hillary dropped out (TMI)...but even I agree this was a little too soon. Sort of like giving USC's Matt Barkley the Heisman because he shows promise.

"Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee sends out thousands of letters inviting qualified people to submit their nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The names of the nominees and other information about the nominations cannot be revealed until 50 years later."

I guess we will have to wait and find out who nominated him
