Nominating posts
What's the general endgame for the nomination process? I'll confess, I don't ever really bother with the Nomination subforum, the posts don't really seem to "take on a life of their own" down there. I just figure it's a free way to give someone credit for an awesome post without giving away points.
It doesn't appear to accomplish very much but adding a nominated tag to the post, which I suppose is a form of acknowledgment in its own right. Are these people going to receive bonus points from the forum for these posts? Are threads with a nominated post going to receive a special icon, similar to the thumbtack for stickies? Currently it seems to be a after-thought that requires more development to be a worthwhile forum feature.
Why can't we nominate posts from the PZ? Even the Mods have to concede that some of the most well-constructed arguments either originate in the PZ or get moved down there for reasons passing understanding. Indeed one of our most celebrated posters, Mudcat, often starts the best threads of the day down in the Private Zone. This would appear to be an oversight, since people should be able to receive recognition for any good posts, regardless of where a Mod moves them. I wanted to nominate this post...
...and that was how I came to learn about the restriction. Perhaps a Mod could simply review nominations from the PZ to make sure they were made on a substantive post and not porn or something. Or we could just let more stuff stay in PT, which would be ideal.
Anyhow I just wanted to better understand the underpinnings of the nomination process. Also I thought the linked post deserved more notoriety than the PZ could offer it. I look forward to gaining a deeper understanding of SBR through this thread.
