End of the Year
for Us!
No matter how long it’s been going on, having a year ending on the last day of September just doesn’t seem right. But that’s how it works in this business and that’s why we’ve just completed our annual inventory. Like that of most companies, our inventory turned up a number of items that haven’t been moving as fast as they should, and rather than have them gather dust as they wait for someone to buy them, we’ve decided to reduce their prices drastically.
Surprisingly, some of the slow movers are poker related, particularly the card guards or card toppers, or card cappers. (Different people call them by different names but they’re all the same thing—visual aids to protect your down cards.) These are in the first group of marked-down items. Click on the link for prices.
Keep in mind, one of these would make a great Christmas gift for that poker fan. Also, we have just one or two of some designs, more of others and we will not be reordering when they go so once they sell out, they are gone for good.
Newest Titles
With football in full swing, and the rush for previews and record keepers over, our focus now is on hoops. Some of the basketball stuff is beginning to arrive, and we’re expecting more shortly. We’re going to look specifically for software this year because there seems to be a demand for it. Anything new that arrives between now and the opening game will appear immediately on our new arrivals page. (put the link here). For now, here’s what’s new:

Latest Podcasts
Since we were a week late getting last month’s newsletter out to subscribers, enough time had passed to discuss three podcasts rather than the usual two. But that cut us down to one for this issue – but what a podcast it is. Howard Schwartz did a dynamite interview with Gene Kilroy, Muhammad Ali’s former right-hand man. Gene, who has ties to boxing, Las Vegas and Hollywood, kept store visitors eavesdropping for an hour. And, while it seems like an insurmountable task, following that interview, Howard segued into a discussion of sports betting with John Kelly. John was best-known as the host of The Stardust Line, a national radio talk show that opened the betting line for all sports and featured many noted gambling experts. Since the demise (Can you call an implosion a demise?) of the Stardust, Kelly found a home with Leroy’s Sports Hour. So if you are into sports and sports betting, take the time to click on the link above and give a listen to Episode 52. You won’t be disappointed.
Book Reviews
In September, Howard reviewed Conrad's Corners -- Uncut and Uncensored, Four books that deal with the special verbiage of gambling, Sam O’Connor’s Tales of Old Las Vegas, Havana Nocturne and two thoroughbred books (the revised version of Betting Thoroughbreds and Steven Kolb’s How to Win the Pick Six. The latest review is devoted to William Jockusch's Pot-Limit Omaha: Understanding Winning Play, the newest title to arrive. Check them all out by accessing the index to Howard’s Reviews.
Store Happenings
Once we finished getting the fixtures, pictures and other arrangements finished, we had an opportunity to invite customers, vendors, authors and media to an open house at the 1550 E. Tropicana location. It was an extra nice turnout. You can get a glimpse of a few of the celebs who attended on the blog post.
HOT SELLERS
Football might be in the air but it's a blackjack book that's flying off the shelves right now. Daniel Dravot's Color of Blackjack might just breathe new life into the casinos' tables. Daniel just produced a DVD as well (Card Counting The Definitive Course) and it's beginning to take off.
END NOTES
Response to Kevin O'Neill's football analysis newsletter "The Max" has been very good. The offer still exists so check it out here or on the banner at the end of the newsletter.
