Aug. 27--Chuck Franzalia remembers the day he cast the bow line out for the Flying Dutchman and waved goodbye to the yacht's passengers.
He never saw them again.
It was October 1976 -- 30 years ago this fall. The 47-foot Flying Dutchman, the Alabama businessman who owned it, and three friends (including the widow of a Destin millionaire) vanished in the Gulf of Mexico. The Dutchman's loss is one of the Emerald Coast's greatest mysteries.
In 1976, Franzalia was 22 years old and an employee at the Sheraton Marina & Lounge in downtown Fort Walton Beach, known in some circles as the "in" place for socialites of the day.
