At what point does it become more profitable to prove your success to a bookie and get a job setting lines instead of placing bets yourself?

Obviously these bookies have people to set the lines, and they need to know what they're doing when it comes to setting them. A long term winning bettor is just someone who does it better than the guy getting paid by the books (talking about opening lines instead of close). How do you get these jobs, and do they pay millions or what?

I'd say linesmaking jobs are pretty hard to come by. Either have to know someone in the business or prove you know your stuff by winning a few big contests.

Vegas sets the lines. Even if you cap a game perfectly and the line is 7 points off Vegas your book will not post such a line for obvious reasons.

Are you talking about a local bookie or a casino? As reload said, to get them in Vegas you have to really know your stuff. When I booked years ago, I used Vegas lines, but moved them up or down myself accordingly to cover my ass if I was getting too heavy on one side.

if you were getting bet heavy on 1 side all you needed to do was push the action off on 5 dimes for probably 3-4 cents cheaper than the -110 your offering. Make a profit for taking wagers that way with no risk. Thank me later

Handicapping has nothing to do with line setting or trading.

yes. if you cap really well in a particular sport, tennis for instance, over a long period of time, you can be hired as a "handicapper evaluator." clearly you need a proven track record over a with large sample size for anyone to take you seriously as a handicapper evaluator.
