A co-worker of mine lost her house, car, and basically everything in a big flood down in the Atlanta area. My company is taking up a collection and our CEO is donating $5,000 right off the top.

How much would you think of donating if something like this came up?

Depends if I liked the person or not.

If I did I would be abele to cover $500, and any extra stuff I had laying around the house for him/her to get started. Lots of ways to help other than just straight cash.

It sounded that way to me, major. Like they would get nowhere near what everything was worth.

Ratio your salary with the CEO's salary and donate the same. If he makes 10 times more donate $500, 50 times more donate $100, etc.

Not a bad way to put it - and that means I need to donate more than I did

damn that sucks i work for insurance ajustors and something like 80% of them get MORE than what it was worth with the option to keep all their old stuff while it gets replaced. Around here when your house catches on fire you make a killing

The problem is..... a lot of these people didn't have flood insurance -- there were places flooded that weren't flooded in 200 years, if ever. And home insurance doesn't cover flooding unless you have flood insurance. I'm down here as well, and today is forecasing 3 inches of rain -- it could get ugly again on an already saturated ground.

By the way, Georgia-Arizona State could be an under with the weather.............

It sounded like that was the case, mtneer. I wasn't ready to believe that they didn't have insurance but I think that's what happened. The property had structural damage and it sounds like they won't get back anywhere close to what it's worth.

I guess they are hoping for some kind of emergency funding from somewhere but who knows how many people will be cutting in on that money if it shows up.
