Minnesota Twins expected to try to sign Joe Mauer for $120 million over 7 years
Joe Mauer, despite catching regularly for the Minnesota Twins and missing the first 22 games with a sore back, still has 179 hits this season — without steroids. That's just two fewer hits than Barry Bonds had in one season during his 22-year major league career. The most hits Bonds had in one season was 181 in 1993 for the San Francisco Giants.
Mauer is not only leading the American League in batting average (.371), but in on-base percentage (.442) and slugging percentage (.606).
Mauer, 26, can become a free agent after the 2010 season. When contract talks get serious after this season, the Twins are expected to try to sign Mauer for about $120 million over seven years.
The New York Yankees, however, with catcher Jorge Posada at 38 years old, are expected to offer more money and possibly more years.
For instance, the Yankees have first baseman Mark Teixeira, 29, under contract for $180 million for eight years. C.C. Sabathia, 29, is pitching with a $161 million, seven-year deal. Mauer is every bit the commodity.
Boston catcher Jason Varitek is 37, and it's clear the big spending Red Sox would love to have Mauer for the next seven or eight years.
Today, Mauer was named catcher for the Sporting News' all-decade team with Albert Pujols (1B), Jeff Kent (2B), Derek Jeter (SS), Alex Rodriguez (3B), Bonds (OF), Ichiro Suzuki (OF), Manny Ramirez (OF), David Ortiz (DH), Randy Johnson (starting pitcher) and Mariano Rivera (reliever).

He is a Minnesota resident, recently bought an auto dealership there and has all his family there.. but how can you turn down NYC money or Boston Money?

I was thinking it would take at least $20 million per year to sign Mauer. He might take a hometown discount to stay with the Twins, but I can see the Yankees and Red Sox throwing some serious money at Mauer that might make it hard for him to turn down. With the new stadium opening next year, the Twins have no excuse for not signing Mauer and paying market value for him.

im surprised a small market team like them would be able to do it.but if they were to do it ,he is the right guy to sign for a long contract

um Barry Bonds ONLY had 181 hits as his high because he was walked 150 times a season, many times intentionally.

        Just sayin'.....

Any more than 5 years would be a HUGE mistake, even moreso if its the Twins who are ponying up the cash.

          Just sayin' ....

Didn't Buck Showalter once intentionally walk Barry with the bases loaded? When he was managing in Arizona.

I'll believe it when I see it. If there was any player a small market team should sign long term, Mauer would be the best choice.

Yeah just found the box score - I'm surprised it didn't happen more often to be honest. You cant pitch to Barry in a game winning situation when you have a turdburglar like Brent Mayne on deck.

If I remember right Brent hit a seed to the right fielder, but they still lost

Next year will be interesting, I don't see Mauer making it to free agency before a move is made.. either re-signed or traded. If MIN lets him make it to free agency he is as good as gone.... Example: Tori Hunter

First and foremost, it's likely easy to turn down since he's happy where he's at and the Twins do compete.

Secondly, $120 million in Minnesota will go a lot further than $150 million in NYC or Bahston.

If they don't plan of resigning him, there is no way to let him walk. The first round pick isn't nearly enough. They would need to get a real return for him.
