In the beginning there was JJ. Before JJ gold, there were no true cult personalities. The internet was a wasteland of drones goin' on and phuckin on about stats.

jjgold was here from day 1. The forum opened Aug. 1, 2005 and his join date is before that. As I recall, he was the 4th poster signed up. I believe SBR_John and Dozer were 1 and 2.

Anyway, whatever you think of his posting, popular or not, it has been going on since the start.

He was not very popular at the start though. I could give a long drawn-out description of forum history but basically it amounts to this: before this forum, the name SBR was thought of as being very respectable and above-the-fray - and this forum originally attracted a lot of people who knew SBR because they were real players using real sportsbooks. There was a significant focus on making money.

JJ did not fit in very well and the shtick was more of a nuisance than anything.

But there was a wearing down process. People who are interested in the shtick found their way here. The increased nuisance factor turned off the players. Now, people betting for money have been largely replaced with people betting for SBR points. Post-UIGEA, it's just as well. Serious players shouldn't be discussing ways to make money on public forums anyway. So jj makes sense.

In answer to the question of who was most popular, I can't think of anyone. I guess people have their personal favorites. It was a more adult atmosphere. If anyone tried the kind of man-crush popularity stuff that seems so common now, it seemed out of place.

If I absolutely had to pick someone, I guess I'd say tacomax. But that hasn't really changed. Taco is still infinitely more popular with the sophisticated crowd than jj.
