Crime and Punishment is not the best book ever written, though it is my favorite of Dostoyevsky's work. Some of his stuff could be sooo tedious though. Don't even get me started on The Brothers Karamazov.
If I had to pick the best book I've ever read - from a literature perspective - I would probably say A Farewell to Arms. Hemingway's work fascinates me still. Some of the simplest prose would contain the most complex subtext and foreshadowing. He was a true genius.

Crime and Punishment is a great book. It's written like a true novel, with an attempt to actually engage and even...gasp...entertain the reader from very early on. That's the problem I have with most Russian literature. It goes on forever and half the time for no apparent reason.... just because they can. They never wanted to finish a book it seems. Crime and Punishment is not in that mold.

Hemingway's simplicity was magnificent...unsurpassed...yet, for me, while I'm laying in bed, with a mind open to all ideas, and not a thought against any idea, Dostovy...? alas blew me away w/ his inherent, subtle, colour of the human predicament...timeless

I really liked Crime. And I'm not a big fan of Russian lit, if you couldn't tell. I really like The Fountainhead too. Not on the same level artistically as the previous subjects, but that's one of the most fun reads I can remember.

OK I've got a copy of Fountainhead in my closet, never read it, but will start as soon as I finish my current read, "A History of the Southern Confederacy" by Eaton.

Can't believe you said that. I was actually going to mention "The Nose". I don't know how we both got from CnP to the Nose. Wow.

That list looks like you are trying to please your old high school English teacher.
Hard Times? Really? I would definitely not put it on any list where I was trying to point out things people must read. Silly two-dimensional characters and manipulative plot devices. Meh.
I've also read East of Eden. It's good but wouldn't be in my top 5 by Steinbeck. I understand Oprah liked it very much though so that makes all the difference.
What people really need to read:
Trainspotting - Irvine Welsh
Breakfast of Champions - Kurt Vonnegut
The Grapes of Wrath - Steinbeck

I recommend The Gambler to those of you who lack the attention span or free time to commit to a brick like Crime & Punishment. Dostoevsky wrote that novella to pay back his gambling debts!

I read breakfast of champions, thought it sucked, didnt get it at all, seemed just like dated hippie crap to me. But maybe there was something I was missing. I doubt it though, I'm very smart, smarter than you mudcat.
it reminded me stylistically of that movie harold and maude. that movie i did get, and it sucked, that i am sure of, there was nothing i missed there. although the cat stevens songs in it are great.
whats so great about vonnegut and breakfast of champions? enlighten me, maybe i didnt get it
the only thing i have ever seen vonnegut do that was good was when he was in "Back to School"

Trainspotting was hilarious. I saw the movie first and had to read the book afterward. Took a few pages to get the dialect, but well worth the time. Begbie is one of the funnier characters I've ever encountered in writing. The "fill breakfast for everyone" scene in the book is probably my favorite. The pool game scene in the movie is just classic too.

Every American should read Grapes of Wrath. Especially the right-wing free market yahoos.
Bluebird is my fav Vonnegut novel... and Back To School was awesome.
Rodney Dangerfield: Vonnegut, your fired.
