We've probably all played this, to get a "Free Heineken" ( or your beverage of choice), while in Las Vegas, at those VP bars.

Say you start with $10 or $20, and play max credits ( 5 quarters or $1.25) a hand. You play to double the $10 ( say we're on a lower budget), in an attempt to drink free ( except for the $1 tip to the bartender).

How often could you expect to double the $10, before you lose it ?

I'd guess 90%+ of the time, you'd fail, and wind up with an $11 Heineken ?

Very hard to catch anything over a full boat, IMO !

I'm sure FH will say something like....you have to play the overlay full pay deuces wild machines at the IP, by the North elevators that don't really work very often.

What if you play the "standard" machines, just trying to hustle up a "Free" drink ?

I think you will get killed, and wind up drinking a lot of $11 beers !

I think 90% of the time you'll walk away with an expensive imported beer, be at 0 credits, and only took two sips off of that beer !

and no even at a bad 95% vp game you're only costing yourself $1 every 16 hands or so.
I'd guess you'd double 25-30% of the time. However you'll often more than double it.

When your ordering your beer make sure the bartender sees you inserting your 20 dollar bill, order your beer, and tip him/her a buck when it arrives.

Play ONE quarter at a time slowly and if you play 10 hands(2.50), you will only lose about a quarter most on paper(not even that)...........after 10 hands and 5 minutes(2 hands per minute), move to another bar and repeat.

But as you said, your better off just firing away on a +ev machine making money in the longrun AND getting free drinks(and food on the slot card).

It sucks to hit a royal, with one coin in. I did that once.

they care about tips, but if you're going to overtip, might as well just by the drink in the 1st place.

Cocktail waitresses care less, as long as they get tipped, too !

You could pretend to play a slot machine on the floor, much easier than at the bar. Or sit in the sportsbook, $1 tip a drink keeps them coming, at many places.

according to "gambler's ruin calculator for vp" you will double 40-42% of time depending on the game. I feel that # is a bit off. you can look it up.
However that includes you may double your stake on your first hand.
Bartenders are aware of the little tricks. They may look the other way, but actually plaing for a few minutes won't, on avg, cost more than the tip.

When I was a bartender, at a locals' joint on lower Fremont st. You could be a high roller, call for a cab, cab co. tells you one hour, pass me a $20, I call my cabbie on his cellphone, he's there in 5 minutes. !
