    HELP from Californians..............
Are any of you aware of a longtime sportswriter with the LA EXAMINER that was with the paper from like 1970-90 or thereabouts.............

The reason I ask is that I met him on more than a few occasions in Vegas in the early 90's and he was in bad health then and I can't recall his name........if I heard the name it may strike a bell with me.

He was very well known on the west coast.

I'm sure he has passed away by now.

    Thanks,
    fh

When I was a kid my dad use to love the sports page of the Herald-Examiner.

I know Allen Malamud wrote for the examiner (he passed away like 10+ years ago). I loved his "Notes on a Scorecard" column. Steve Harvey also wrote for the Examiner and both of them ended up writing at the LA Times. These two are are all I can remember right now.

I at least recall reading Malmuds column........that may be the gentlemen that I spoke with often.

Going to do search on that name and see what I find...........I know the guy I'm thinking of moved to Vegas after he quit the Examiner.

Thanks Immortality, i found the following clip and Allan was indeed the gentlemen that I had met, as I distinctively recall him telling me about his role in RAGING BULL. He was in very bad health in his final years and he used to call me up and to chit chat how depressed he was and I in turn would lend an ear to him for more than a short while................a feeling of sadness is with me as I read the following clip.................................... ........

From an obit by Joe Soqui in the DT: "Allan Malamud, former Daily Trojan Sports Editor and longtime columnist for both the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner and the Los Angeles Times, died Sept. 14, 1996, of natural causes. He was 54. Malamud is best known for his column "Notes on a scorecard" that appeared four times a week in the sports section of the Times. He graduated from USC in 1963 and was quickly hired by the Herald-Examiner in the same year. The next 32 years of his life were spent focusing on the Los Angeles sports scene. His column was exactly what it was called--a series of notes and tidbits that no one else in the business seemed to get a hold of. He covered a variety of sports from horse racing to boxing to football in Los Angeles. Malamud was the sports editor of the Daily Trojan in 1963 and is regarded as one of the most famous journalists to come out of the university. He also had a short role in many films, including "Raging Bull" and "White Men Can't Jump

Allan Malamud: Allan Malamud, whose "Notes On A Scorecard" column was required reading for L.A. sports fans, was one of Southern California's most popular, hardest working and talented sportswriters. He was a friend of athletes, coaches, journalists and fans alike. He was a fixture at local sporting events, particularly those of his beloved Trojans. A 1963 USC graduate who was sports editor of the Daily Trojan, he worked for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner from 1964 until it folded in 1989 (he started his "Notes" column in 1974), then moved over to the Los Angeles Times. Malamud also was a friend of producers and actors. He even made a name for himself in Hollywood, appearing in bit parts in 15 films. Fittingly, the last sporting event he attended was USC's 1996 home game against Oregon State. He died 2 days later. He was 54.

Now I'm not to sure..........as Bud was in Brians Song and that is perhaps the movie I was recalling my friend saying he was in.

This was in the early 90's and BUD or ALLEN had moved to Vegas, if that is something somebody can confirm.

Bud Furillo, who covered sports in print and on the air in Southern California for nearly 60 years, has died.
