Look for Cincinnati Bearcats to Continue its Winning Ways

    September 8, 2009 by Madukwe - 0 Comments

As usual, the highly-anticipated college football season opening weekend did not disappoint. A very lifting weekend for most, as long as your name isn’t Sam Bradford, brought about many questions regarding the top-rated teams in the nation: How will Ohio State’s lackluster defensive performance against the Midshipmen (who possess a very underrated triple option offense) affect their upcoming game versus the Trojans? Will Colt McCoy emerge as the top Heisman candidate with Sam on the shelf?? Is LeGarrette Blount really as stupid as he seems, or is he just another thug who will end up slapping around a woman or shooting himself in the leg??! With all of the intriguing uncertainties that materialized from an exhilarating five days of football, one question was emphatically answered on Monday: The Cincinnati Bearcats are FOR REAL.

After an unusual 2008 campaign where the Bearcats won a school-record 11 games, finished atop the Big East for the first time since joining the conference, and were invited it to their first ever BCS Bowl Game, many college football analysts reviewed the Bearcats’ chances of repeating a Big East Championship with a lot of skepticism. After losing ten starters on defense and the veteran offensive presence of receiver Dominick Goodman, most experts predicted that the ‘Cats would finish third or fourth in the Big East this season. With an awkwardly-scheduled conference game against rival Rutgers (predicted to finish ahead of Cincy by most) to open the season, the Bearcats knew that they had to win to gain respect throughout the Big East and the AP and USA Today Coaches Polls.

And win they did; and in convincing fashion. After jumping out to an early lead, the game was basically over at half-time with the Bearcats leading 31-7. UC Quarterback Tony Pike (Mel Kiper, Jr’s 5th best rated senior quarterback in the nation), who completed 27 of 34 passes for 362 yards and 3 touchdowns, only needed to play three quarters as the Bearcats routed the Scarlet Knights 47-15. A very impressive win for Cincinnati, the Bearcats proved that they can win an important conference game on the road, and looked to reclaim their status as the favorites in the Big East.

If you’re looking to win some easy money, I would suggest investing in the Cincinnati Bearcats for the 2009 season. With a very important conference win out of the way, Cincinnati looks to have a pretty favorable schedule for the remainder of the season. Conference home games against Louisville, Connecticut, and West Virginia will be very challenging, but I expect the Bearcats to handle their business and come out on top in these matchups. The toughest remaining game on the schedule will take place during the last week of the season where they will go on the road to take on their conference-rival Pittsburgh Panthers. This matchup could very much determine the Big East Championship. It is too early to decisively predict the winner of this game right now, as much could happen down the stretch of the season to change the lines. As for now, I would still slightly favor Cincinnati, which would most-likely crown them the Big East Conference Champions.

With preseason AP rankings of 30 and 33, respectively, Rutgers and Cincinnati were regarded as two of the early front-runners to win the Big East this season. Many football analysts looked for this opening-week conference matchup to help clarify the cloudy conference picture, as there was no real declared favorite going into the season. After Cincinnati’s decisive and humiliating 47-15 rout over Rutgers, you would have to mark down the Bearcats as the new favorites to win the Big East in 2009.

Good to see UC move up to #23. Southeast Missouri State better look out. I think UC has a great shot at winning the Big East this season.
