Shut them down completely at least 10 hrs a day therefore have two and alternate them. The pcs will run smoother, rest and also less likely to get viruses.

#3Are you saying that by using two computers for a total of the same time you would use one somehow makes you likely to get less viruses on the two combined then you would on one? How exactly do you figure that?

#6Ive used the same computer for 7 years now runs super fast with little enhancements, ive studied and comPleted most of cisco networking courses. Well from experience forget a anti virus software. They expose your computer to more viruses than they prevent. Download malwarebytes dot com and run it once a week, ive obtained 2 viruses in my computers span that i was unable to remove by system restores or data recovery. Malwarebytes got rid of it in seconds. Keep backups and id suggest a complete restoration and recallabration every 3 years which takes about 1-2 hours to do and is very simple yet gek squad will charge 200-400 to do it. All u need is your active directory disks n of course your windows platform disks.Comment -

#10Turning the computer on and off can damage a computer. When you turn the computer on the cpu heats up and when you turn it off it cools down. The affect of turning it on and off can deform the cpu chip and thus damage the computer but in JJ's assumption its almost off while you sleep or at wrk so its not going on and off, overall though turning a computer off for half the day will not help its performance and other than from a economical standpoint there no facts to back up the assumptionComment -

Yea pico most dont understand what a anti virus actually does, when your running a anti virus the software is knowing of so many millions of viruses and blocks certain malware before it enters your pc. But how does it do this? When your isp sends a ping to connect to a website the anti virus scans the entire script for the page. So any virus not known in the program will infect your computer cause thousands are discovered a day. Thats why you have to update it daily atleast weeklyComment -

#24I'm no computer expert, but people I talk to who know computers say you're best leaving it running rather than turn on and off all the time. While most viruses come from emails and certain websites, I like having an anti virus program. I've had my computer over 5 1/2 years now with the 1st 2+ years using mainly Norton, which I didn't care for. I had to get it cleaned once a year if not sooner, plus pay for it.
I found that the free anti virus are the best. The last 3 years I used AVG free which worked real good, but due to some changes they made i didn't care for, switched to Avira 4 months ago which works great. Complaints I hear is when they make their daily updates, a pop up ad appears for their premium software, which to me is nothing, especially for free. When I scan my computer weekly it takes about 40 minutes. The past 3 years my computer runs fine and never have to take it to the shop for cleaning since I've used the free anti virus. The top 3 are Avira (I'd recommend), AVG free, and Avast. Why pay for antivirus software when the free is better? Just my 2 cents worth (or should I say 2 SBR points worth)Comment -

#25If you live in a wet climate, buy a dehumidifier.I couldn't believe how much water was in the air in your house until I got one this year.Air purifiers are good too for dust collecting. If you ever open your computer housing if you live in a wet and dusty environment,it will blow your mind as to what the fans in the computer suck up and get coated with.Comment -

#27My old PC was six years old and was on 24-7 with heavy use with almost zero preventive maintenance (I think I blew the dust out of it maybe twice) and it ran the whole time without any problems... on the other hand I had a laptop that I hardly used at all fry out within 6 months of buying it... Seems like most of the advice on specific brands and methods of protecting your computer are just based on individual past circumstances and can be better explained through personal randomness rather then any real solid research...
I paid like $350 for my current computer (hell both my monitors were more expensive then the pc) and, despite getting almost 2 years old, it works fine for what I do (basic software use, internet, gambling, and watching an occasional movie)...
Must people way over estimate what need in a computer and end of buying an expensive computer designed for gaming or video editing when all they do is surf the internet.. As cheap as a workable computer would be for most people it seems pretty silly to waste any significant thought worrying about it burning out unless you are make minimum wage or are living on a tiny fixed income...Comment -

I'm pretty sure either of these would meet your needs...
