The Los Angeles Dodgers have seen the Rockies and Giants getting bigger in their rearview mirror, so they added some power to try to pull away.

The Dodgers acquired slugger Jim Thome from the White Sox and right-hander Jon Garland from the Diamondbacks on Monday after both players cleared waivers.

            Thome

            Garland

"I think it's made us stronger," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said after a 5-3 loss to the Diamondbacks. "We have a threat off the bench now, and in Garland we certainly have someone who knows how to pitch."

For players to be eligible for the postseason with a new team, transactions had to be completed before midnight ET on Monday.

Thome is batting .252 with 23 homers and 74 RBIs in his fourth season in Chicago. The five-time All-Star is 12th on the all-time home run list with 564.

ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reported earlier on Monday that the White Sox had sent a memo to teams around the league saying veteran players were available for trade. Thome, Jermaine Dye and Scott Linebrink were said to be on that list.

It's not immediately clear what role Thome will fill for the Dodgers. He has been exclusively a designated hitter the past two seasons and hasn't played first base -- the position he played earlier in his career -- since appearing in one game there in 2007. He hasn't played first base full time since 2004.

"I'm not saying you won't see Jimmy at first, but I want to talk to him," Torre said.

James Loney is the Dodgers regular first baseman, but he has only nine homers.

Garland is 8-11 this season with a 4.29 ERA in his first season with Arizona. He pitched in Los Angeles last season, going 14-8 with a 4.90 ERA for the Angels. He won 18 games in consecutive seasons for the White Sox in 2005 and 2006.

Torre also said that Garland could start Thursday, against his old team, the D-backs, and that he will get the ball every fifth day.

"I found out in the sixth or seventh inning that it was official and I was definitely shocked," said Garland, who was at Dodger Stadium with the D-backs on Monday night.

Garland was born and raised in Southern California.

"I really didn't want to be traded but if there was a place that I could have picked it was here," he said.

The Dodgers will receive Thome and cash for minor league infielder Justin Fuller. The Dodgers said that Garland was acquired for a player to be named later.

Thome is owed $2,415,301 from his $13 million salary, and is eligible to become a free agent after the World Series.

Garland is due $1,161,202 from his $6.25 million salary. His contract includes a $10 million mutual option. He gets a $2.5 million buyout if the team declines and $1 million is he declines. Because he was traded, the Dodgers cannot offer him salary arbitration if he is a Type A free agent.

Thome goes from a third-place team trailing Detroit and Minnesota in the American League Central Division to the first-place Dodgers, who came into Monday night leading the NL West by six games.
The deal also reunites Thome with Manny Ramirez, his teammate on the Cleveland Indians in the 1990s.

Garland gave up five hits and a walk over seven sharp innings in a 9-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday.

In a separate move on Monday, the busy White Sox reportedly dealt pitcher Jose Contreras to the Rockies. The right-hander led the AL in losses with 13, against only five wins, and had a 5.42 ERA.

The Rockies get Contreras and cash for Triple-A right-hander Brandon Hynick. Hynick is 10-9 with a 3.83 ERA and two complete games in 26 starts this season with Triple-A Colorado Springs.

I'd say they're less concerned about losing ground to BOTH the Rockies and the Giants (since at the moment the first two finishing teams in the NL West will make the playoffs) but concentrating more on bolstering the lineup for when the playoffs actually occur.

i think these were very good moves for them. they have 3 very good starters in kershaw, billingsly, and wolf, its the 3 and 4 guys in the rotation that are killing them. im not saying there top 3 are cy young contendors but there deff well above average. with that being said the giants do have one of the best rotations in the majors and there top 3 sh*ts on the dodgers top 3. the problem with the giants is they dont have enough offense and they wont have how field, which will greatly hurt them, as they suck donkey balls away. im a dodgers fan so ive seen them slump like this before, it may sound funny but this might not be the worst timing in the world. after their new picks ups their moral will pick up which should equate to wins. and an up ward trending team like the dodgers right before plyoff time can be very dangerous...

you guys also forget that the dodgers had the best record in the majors for over half the season. that was before they added do there bulpen, and now theyve added to their bench. i dont know about you but if the dodgers break out of their slump with in the next week and a half, ill take my chances with them

Garland is a guy who you liked to face when playing the D-Backs. He is average at best. You Dodger fans will see you'll get one good start for every two or three. You can have him.
His last 6 starts he has only faced one good team, the Phillies and they beat him up for 5 ER in 5 innings. So dont let ESPN fool you with the stats.

but hes not your ace. hes going to be the 4 or 5 guy in the rotation. isnt that all you want from one of your bottom end starters? a guy that can eat up 5 or 6 innings and only giving up 2-4 runs (depending on how good the team is. im a dodgers fan and thats all i expect and im a dodgers fan, anythinng beyond that is just a bonus. if he can manage to allow less than 4 runs in each of his starts, it then becomes the offences job to win the game. i agree hes not a guy that will win games for you like lee, wainwright, and timmy boy, but he doesnt have to be.

im sure not a lot of people thought about this , but maybe they should. have you ever thought that they didnt get garland just because of his pitching abilities? as a whole the dodgers are a young and inexperienced team (playoff/ world series wise) so im sure they wanted some guys with palyoff experience, and thats what they got. all 3 of the players they picked up the past couple of days have either won a world series or competed in a world series. and that experience is something the dodgers really needed, and they got it.

                                just my 2 cents
