unauthorized programs running in background slowing down browser
Anybody know how to rid of these pests?

Only when I log off do I get to see the programs that I never started, but that are running in the background. Examples: gettingstartedform; setpoint.exe; sofficebin.

Is this a firefox problem? Haven't been using any other browsers in a long time, but this is getting very annoying.

Yeah, that's the fastest way to get the basic problems out of the way. Make sure to Google any of the applications you don't recognize, so you avoid disabling things your computer uses to run (sound drivers, video drivers, etc).

I would also suggest booting your computer in Safe Mode with Networking, and uninstalling programs that you don't use anymore in the Add/Remove menu in the Control Panel.

Also, if you aren't already using it, Firefox is a much better/safer browser than Internet Explorer, so switch over immediately. Also look into installing an add-on called No Script. It's a little annoying at first, as it disables everything extra on a website from running, but once you configure it, it'll help protect your computer in the future.

go to the device manager or install new hardware and run the wizard to detect it.

How much ram do you have and are you using 32 bit XP or 64 bit xp?
32 bit xp will only recognize/use up to 3.25GB of ram.

OP, get the program HijackThis. Run a system scan where you can see everything running and you'll be able to disable it.
