Hi, I am pretty new to all this. I'm in the USA and have not actually started betting yet. I have a lot to learn. I've been reading as much about sports betting / handicapping as I can on here and by watching some videos on sbr.tv. In addition, I've been watching lines on sbrlines.com. That is a very nice piece of software. I've taken time to order the sportsbooks in the settings, based on which books take USA players, and with a focus on sportsbooks that are offering MLB lines.
Matchbook 1, Pinnacle #2, the other top books for USA on page 1, etc. I put the other UK sportsbooks on page 3, and the sportsbooks that didn't have overnight MLB lines on page 3. (I'm aware Pinnacle doesn't take USA punters, but I've read here it's worth observing. That's why I have it next to MB. They should tell me what the "fair price" is). I can open 2 Firefox windows and position them such that I can compare the money lines for 20 sportsbook at once.
Could you explain what is happening here on the New York Mets v Chicago Cubs game, 8/28/2009?
The money line opened on Matchbook at 08/27 19:59 +218 / -246.
The last few line changes (the user interface will show them if you click the line) are
08/28 13:17 +244 / -252
08/28 13:17 +246 / -250
08/28 13:18 +244 / -246
08/28 13:19 +250 / +250 (this was the closing line)
How did it go from -246 to +250 on the Cubs? Did someone make a typo when they offered odds on Matchbook? They meant to type -250, right? But they have to live with their mistake on MB, right? Other books had closing lines of +225/-265 (Greek), +230/-270 (Bookmaker). If I could have bet it in time, couldn't I have bet Cubs +250 on Matchbook, NYM +230 on Bookmaker, for a "super" arbitrage? The arb calculator here shows 69% profit for entering +230 and +250! Usually arbs are like 0.5-3% that I find in MLB money lines.
I know that arbers are looked down upon by handicappers, I'm just trying to learn all the tricks.
