It worked pretty well for me this trip.

    I volunteer for it.

I flew USairways, Charlotte based hub. On the way in they asked for volunteers, since they were overbooked. I got on standby for the next flight, came into LV 1.5 hours later, and with a $350 travel voucher good for a year.

On the way back, I volunteered for a bump ( in Charlotte, again), got it, had to spend the night at a (comped) hotel, got in 10 hours later, but with another $300 in free travel. It was OK, I was tired, didn't really want to drive home ( 1 hour) from Hartford at midnite. The sleep did me well. I had an empty seat next to me on the morning flight, too. I always enjoy that !

Plus SBR paid for the original flight, so now I have two more !

First one was a great deal.... $350 for 1.5 hours !

I tried to get bumped down in North Carolina a few weeks ago, as I had no time restraints for returning to chicago, and I could have spent another night with my brother down there.... but I was too late

    good for you bro

Never tried it but it sounds like you made out well, especially on the trip there.

i used to volunteer for these all the time, the free air travel can really start piling up

a couple of my best scores were:

coming back from super bowls (always overbooked), also other major sporting events

coming back from europe (england) during peak summer vacation flights on an airline that flies only once per day.
my ex-wife and i bumped ourselves two days in a row to wait for the next days flight, and got 400$ check, hotel, and 3 meals each per day. really enjoyed depositing 1,600$ when i got home

I'm no expert on this.... but I suggest boarding late, if you want the bump, and volunteer early.

I might have to have went Hartford to Charlotte to Dallas, to Vegas in the worst case scenario, but caught just a 90 min delay, and got on the next flight.

Return was cool enough.... I was tired anyway, and wanted a smoke !

          Meal vouchers also !

I wouldn't mind if traveling alone but usually am in a time restraint and/or with my girl. If i were by myself I would do it in a second.

I would do it going home, would suck if going to Vegas and it took an extra day to get there. You got a great deal only having to wait 1 1/2 hours later. Now you are set for next years bash!

If I have nothing going on the next day, I am always the first one to try to volunteer.

I'm happy with the way this worked out, here ! I'm married, but could have easily picked up a Brown Sugar getting off of shift at the Ramada, if desired. I decided against it,

It's probably +ev to take it on return trips home if you have nothing lined up the next day or two

I'd LOVE to continue this bumping off process indefinetly, as well as travelling w/o the wife, Doug could get used to that !

Booked a flight a few years ago from London to LA. Got bumped on the way there, they put me on an earlier flight in first class with a different airline and a free roundtrip flight. Got bumped on the way back for another free roundtrip flight (could have got bumped the day after but I'd already missed a day of work). Got bumped a further 3 times on the free flights making a total of 6 transatlantic return trips for the price of 1. Good times.

I refuse to do it. Honestly my time is more valuable then waiting around. I generally book flights based on times that I HAVE to get back so I would rather just be on the scheduled flight....

Bumpy flights tend to make me nauseous, no I don't like bumpy flights.
                                        I like smooth flights.
