#2Very interesting. I'm curious how this will end up once we get into track and field where Caribbean countries have had a lot of success. Also, do we place Gold medals over total medals? Here's some interesting data prior to these Olympics. What you won't see in the list is East Germany. They by far were the most successful in the Olympics with only ~16 million people, even though they probably had the most technical science and doping.Originally posted by OptionalHas to be one the greatest sporting nations ever?
Always punches above weight.
China = 1.4 Billion people
USA = 330 Million
Japan = 130 Million
Russia = 150 Million
Australia = 25 Million

Jamaica is the country jumping into the top 10 after a successful 2016 Games. When this list is updated after Tokyo 2020, Bermuda will be highly ranked after winning a gold medal in triathlon.

#14Not yet.Originally posted by kostasbluesIs it true the military are helping the police enforce the lockdown in Sydney?
Horror movie
But apparently some loonies say they will ignore the lockdown and protest on the weekend and the cops plan to cordon them off and arrest the lot.
General public looking forward to it like a sporting event. To see the loonies put in their places hard and fast!
It's your horror movie having laws enforced on you instead the anarchy you have to suffer under there Kosta ;-)
My horror movie would be a losing Prime Minister inciting people to attack our parliment house. But each to their own eh!
Aussies are mostly happy with how our govts have handled the pandemic best in the world. Economy booming, unemployment down, no virus in the wild in 99% of the country. And all it took was 5 weeks of lockdown in May 2020 that the people did not fight against to do that.
How happy are your peoples Kosta? Can you say that about most being happy with their govt response there?.Comment -

#17I said in these forums that the US could have prevented all the lockdowns and economic failures if we could have just hunkered down for a few weeks. 1 month of sacrifice could have had us wide open the rest of the year. But our leadership was an abject failure. Left it up to the states and we've been struggling with this virus ever since. Now, it's just a cluster fukk with so much confusion and misinformation. This country is in a bad place.Originally posted by OptionalMy horror movie would be a losing Prime Minister inciting people to attack our parliment house. But each to their own eh!

#23Only USA counts it that way. Rest of the world uses the official Olympic tally based on Golds then rest as tie breakers.Originally posted by Mac4LyfeIs that total medals? Is that for real?? That's fukking impressive. Wow.
But think we do about the same both ways.
I know we would have ranked above China in 2nd or 3rd at the 2000 olympics based on total medals, when we had a huge home town team.
Not that it matters. If a country sends twice as many athletes and wins more first and second loser medals, it might make them feel better, but it's all about the Golds for real winners..Comment -

#24I like looking at both. Gold is impressive but getting silver AND bronze is pretty damn good too. Usually, the countries with the most medals have the most gold, silver and bronze as well. Either way that is incredible for Australia. I did not know that.

#25Respect to the Aussies, they love that water!
There are so many terrible Olympic sports, these counts don't mean that much to me anymore (hopefully Aussies aren't picking up a bunch in synchronized diving)
Aussies should let in more immigrants ( they are kind of cheating there...)
I thought there were way more lockdowns than the 5 weeks in May 2020? Welp, good on ya!Comment -

#265 weeks for Sydney and this state. And it's been pretty much restriction free since then until this latest outbreak. Melbourne had it a lot harder. I think 3 or 4 months total for them.Originally posted by WrongsideRespect to the Aussies, they love that water!

As if losing by 5 golds but winning 10 extra bronzes makes you the winner
If NBC didn't try to fake it, maybe Americans would still care more about the olympics. No pride in fake winning to keep excitement up..Comment
