The last 10 days are significant because of "laylatil qadr" Or "the night of power and honor". This night during Ramadan is when the first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was recieved. No one knows for sure what night it was, but scholars agree it was during the last ten days of Ramadan.

When fasting, it is best not to exert yourself. But when not fasting, yes I keep in shape.

Ull survive. Billions of Muslims do it every year. Lot of poor people don't have clean running water to drink like majority of us do. It also teaches u to appreciate how blessed u are to have what the poor don't have. I think they will do fine. I'm sure they will hydrate themselves very well ahead of time. Espn even did a article on a Minnesota Vikings defensive player who kept his fast during practice sessions, it was tough for him but he hydrated his body well in advance.
