The New York Mets' Yoenis Cespedes has opted out of the 2020 season after he did not report to Truist Park for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Braves, according to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen.

Van Wagenen addressed Cespedes' decision with reporters after the Mets' 4-0 loss.

Earlier Sunday, the Mets released a statement in which Van Wagenen said they could not reach Cespedes.

"He did not reach out to management with any explanation for his absence," Van Wagenen said. "Our attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful."

Cespedes, 34, was the designated hitter for Saturday's 7-1 loss to the Braves, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He had served as the Mets' designated hitter in eight games this season, going 5-for-31 (.161) with 15 strikeouts.

A two-time All-Star, Cespedes returned to the lineup this season for the first time since July 20, 2018. He missed most of the past two years with a series of leg problems, getting surgery on both heels and then a broken ankle after a tumble at his Florida ranch from a reported run-in with a wild boar.

They hope he takes it. It will scrap his existing contract and instead he'll get an offer worth 750 million.

Payable by 100 dollars per year for the next 7.5 million years

It really seems like people are upset at Cespedes for treating the baseball org/owners exactly like they've been treating players, especially recently. Owners can't cry about a lack of communication when players are finding out their game status on Twitter before anywhere else.

There is no way allowing him to use the virus as an excuse should be acceptable, when he no showed the game. Guy was either high, drunk or both. Mets must not pay him another dollar. Opt out without pay, or suspended without pay. Whichever way they want to do it
