Bakersfield doctors push to lift shelter-in-place order, Bay Area health experts disagree
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Tonight sparks are flying between those who believe that Governor Newsom should lift the stay-at-home order and others who believe it would be catastrophic to do so. Two doctors in the Bakersfield area are pushing for the California shelter-in-place order to be lifted and doctors we talked within the Bay Area are strongly opposed to the idea.
Dr. Dan Erickson and Dr. Artin Massihi own and run an urgent care facility in Kern County.
"Do we need to still shelter in place? Our answer is no. Do we need businesses to be shut down? No. Do we need to test them and get them back to work? Yes we do," says Dr. Dan Erickson.
The two say they have their own statistics that show COVID-19 is similar to the flu.
Dr. George Rutherford of UCSF disagrees with that saying that the mortality rate of COVID-19 could end up being 30 times worse than the flu.
"What we're trying to do is prevent people from dying that's what we're trying to do in the Bay Area," Rutherford says. "The early projections were that there would be 44,000 deaths in the Bay Area. There have been 210 so far so I think we're doing pretty damn good and I've certainly don't want to mess with that kind of success."
The latest data from the local health officials shows the Bay Area currently has over 250 deaths.
ABC7 special correspondent Dr. Alok Patel echos those thoughts and cautions using data from one location.
"It's not scientifically sound to take one population from one county, extract the data and try to make a claim about the national picture or even the rest of the states very different populations," Dr. Patel says.
Erickson and Massihi gave their thoughts on reopening last week. Since that time, their message has been viewed millions of times online.
Dr. Rutherford says we need to learn from history. In 1918 San Francisco reopened early after the Spanish Flu and an additional 3,000 people died.

Haven't watched the whole thing but a few thoughts to consider...
That doctor has a vested monetary interest in opening back up. He's Co owner in an urgent care practice.
He stated that County public health officials agreed with him that they should reopen and lift the shelter in place order. They promptly said no we don't agree.
Kern county is also heavily rural with a lot of farm land and not a ton of urban areas. JJ knows this as he often visits daggles in Bakersfield.Comment -
Regarding Dr. Erickson’s claim that this virus so far has proven “similar in nature to the seasonal flu,” Dr. Hemmal Kothary Thursday morning shared otherwise during an interview on 17 News at Sunrise.
When asked if it is fair to make such a comparison at this point, Kothary, the chief medical officer with Dignity Health’s Central California division, answered, “Right now, I would say absolutely not. The flu acts a lot different. This virus is a lot more virulent. It passes from people to people a lot more aggressively. The symptoms are a lot more aggressive. It seems to affect a lot of age groups the flu typically won’t affect.”Comment -
First off. They don't have their own statistics. This is data that everyone has access to.
I am sure you have heard when people go to the doctor and are diagnosed and then say they will get a second opinion?
Watching those 2 videos, they make total sense. Using scientific data and first hand knowledge. Remember the 30K ventilators NY said they must have or else? They needed 5K. The rest are being sent elsewhere. Car factories shut down to make these things. If you have to go on a ventilator, you are almost as good as dead anyway. 80-90% who need to go on one, they die. You are in really bad shape if you need to go on one.
This weekend, people were being in California beaches. A father and 2 sons were fined for riding their bikes in a park where no one was around. A man fined for fishing on a lake with no one around. But go to Costco or Walmart full of people with no masks touching everything is perfectly fine. Its that fukking nuts?Comment -

I think the highest estimates for yearly deaths of the seasonal flu in the US over the last many years has been about 60,000.
And in few months, with citizens for the most part abiding by stay at home recommendations in place, we have seen 55k deaths.

you are right you cant read the numbers and come to that conclusion because they dont add in january and february in the numbers. but if you look at the graphs there is a light grey line in many of them that is significantly higher than the red line in those months. look at austria and portugal, they have much lower deaths for the whole of 2020. when you compare the area of the shaded red to the area between the red and the light grey line, most countries look similar in deaths to me. italy and spain are much higher though.Comment -

Those figures add up to an annual mean avg of 38,000 deaths
per 12 month periods from the common seasonal influenza.
(which btw, is still ongoing now, in addition to COVID-19)
Also, there are no mitigation measures put in place to stem the
annual spread of the seasonal flu. It spreads freely.
Meanwhile, COVID-19 has
thus far killed over 51,000 just in the month of April alone!
...and that is despite the lockdowns which surely reduced the spread!
