Could an NFL player be a winning bettor?
Just based on their knowledge of the game and other teams and players, etc.

If they could bet every game other than the ones they played in, and did not tell other players or influence games, etc could they beat books or are the numbers so sharp they would lose?

No way. These guys don't have the time during regular season to do the analysis. A few are smart enough, but practice schedules prevent you from working 20+ hours a week productively.

So Justin you are saying an Eagles player wouldnt have an edge in a Cowboys/Giants game?

They watch a lot of film and play those teams 2 times a year.

There was a report earlier today on ESPN that Favre didn't come back because of gambling allegations. The Commish was looking into his interceptions and concluded that he might have thrown a few games... this and the fact that Minnesota likes to run the ball gave Favre pause. He didn't want the heat from the Commish and he didn't know if he'd get enough pass attempts to throw games late.

This was reported by Michael Irvin who was just re-signed by ESPN.

They are probably less square and have more respect for the bad teams, and know how teams matchup well, but NFL capping is still hard. Baseball guys probably would be better at playing their league.
