Monetary gain.
He's selfish, he wants that Hall of Fame moniker to enhance the value of his autograph.

pete could of paid the money he had to the bookie and would of cost him less than 200,000. Instead he thought he could stiff guy and cost him millions. Ask yourself this...why did pete have to go to buffalo,new york to find a bookie? Why did he admit to using greenies all those years. Why did he pitch soto on 3 days rest 19 out of 30 starts that year?(which shortened his career) Why did he cut tony perez to play himself as a player/manager.
