Consider Vonage for your home phone service, you can add a Canadian phone number for $5 per month. A Canadian address is easily obtained, try the UPS Store / Mailboxes etc. Money Mart or similar service providers, I have used Money Mart as my address in the past, just convert your "box" number to "Apt" ie box 201 is Apt 201.
I believe you can setup a proxy server or anonymous web service to mask/hide your US based IP address.
Getting a valid "legit" Canadian ID such as Drivers license is not difficult, I would imagine those closer to the border would be more motivated to go through the process than someone in Arizona or Florida. Prepaid **** and Master Cards are also easily obtained if you cant get approved for a regular card (your US credit history isn't used in Canadian applications for credit & vice versa)
Americans are allowed to visit Canada for up to 6 months without a ****, anything longer than 6 months requires permission from the Canadian Government or a return to the US and then back to Canada.
Americans CAN NOT (Legally) work in Canada unless they have been issued the proper permits etc.
As a Canadian with family in both countries and who has spent considerable time in the US I can tell you that it can be done.
