I am relatively new to all this so forgive me if this question is naiive.
Why don't more bookies post their own opening lines. Alot (most) seem to take their lead from Cris or Pinny or whoever.
Occasionally I see no opening line from anyone until a few hours before the game.
2 things I don't understand.
1. It shouldn't be too hard for a decent linesmaker to get close to the right odds. I don't know alot about NBA but when I do some research I reckon I can pick the spread within a couple of points 9 times out of 10. The other time I have missed something that someone more experienced would see.
If more bookies posted earlier lines wouldn't they get more action?
Do alot of bookies simply copy their odds?
2. (I know I am missing something here). Even if a bookie opened a line which was out - wouldn't their odds swing back and forth so that the true odds were found and their book would be close to balanced?
I can only imagine most books see the risk as being far greater than the reward.
