Adults using baby talk

So I'm out to dinner with the girlfriend and some brand new parents and grandparents sit in the both behind us. The mom starts talking and anything she says is in that baby talk tone. She is talking like the 3 month old baby can understand what she is saying. As if that's not enough the baby starts crying and then the dad gets in on the baby talk action. He says "You must be hungry. You sound like your mom when you get hungry." Then everyone at the table laughs like it's the funniest thing they have ever heard.

Is it just me or does this crap piss anyone else off? I want to turn around and smack the parents and explain to them that the kid has no idea what they are saying and the only thing they have accomplished is annoying the shit out of me.

Yep it pisses me the f*ck off as well...I live in a 4 plex and the guy that lived in the apartment next to me would do that shit all the f*cking time and was loud as ****. Trying to take a nap on the couch and he starts with that shit...made me want to break something. Glad the annoying f*cking prick moved.

That's exactly why parents use baby talk.

Studies have shown that babies are more responsive to it then regular dialogue. They pretty much zone out regular dialogue but the cooing baby noises they are more responsive too.

If you angrily scream "GOOD DOG! THAT'S A GOOD DOG!!" at a dog, it is going to whimper away.

If you in a very friendly baby-voice while scratching a dog's back say "Who's the little shithead? Who's stupid as hell?" it's going to be wagging its tail and very happy.

Considering infants and pets don't understand the english language, infliction of their voice is important.

Timely thread, as along the same lines, I was unfortunate enough to have a first row seat to the same scenario the other night, but with genders reversed.

I took the missus to the Keg, and had a very, very enjoyable meal, a few beers, the missus was looking great...So pretty much a perfect evening out, with a movie yet to come.

Alas, this peaceful and serene scene is shattered by the absolute pathetic display from my "male" brethren a couple of seats away. Apparently, his girlfriend/wife felt that meal-time was over and it was time to leave the Keg. "Male" on the other hand was not quite done and very much wanted to order another pint.

However, instead of simply saying "Hold on dear, I'm getting myself another beer" he proceeds to literally beg and grovel (In complete babytalk), literally pleading with her to "allow" him to have another beer. Holding her hand across the table (With both of his), pouting and making his eyes all big and goofy lookin', "Oh pweeeese honey, pweeeese can I get another drink"...That's exactly how he was saying 'please', like a 3 year old kid.

Anyway, sorry for the long description and I have no idea how it ended, as I couldn't bear to watch this anymore. Probably the most pathetic thing I have seen in the millenium thus far.....
